Anyone have any thoughts on using the wire cages as a basis for a "vault room"? I remember them being used in the military for general security and do remember them being used for an arms room at one location. Of course, that was in a rather secure building that was occupied 24/7. I'm not sure how secure these really are, certainly not as secure as a real vault room, but it may be a lot easier and cheaper than pouring concrete in an existing structure. Could even frame standard walls around it to conceal it.

It would certainly slow down or deter many. But just as with anything, the door is going to be the weak point.
Ive toyed with the idea of framing up a room and then using sheets of 3/4" plywood to further secure the walls topped off with standard drywall. But securing the door has been the big ? in my equation. |

Those don't look like something a hacksaw blade wouldn't make quick work of. Wire cages are more about enforcing procedure than they are about security, so I doubt it's a cost-effective solution. You could build yourself a wooden box out of four by fours and get better protection cheaper. At least that would take more sawing or prying to get through. |
