So I have a YHM Cobra 45 "First generation", so it will not accept the Universal Pistol Adapters that YHM sells. My Cobra has a piston with M16x1 LH threads for my USP Tactical. I'm looking to pick up a threaded 1911 barrel with .578"-28 RH and I am hoping there are mounting options available for me to use my current Cobra 45. Note: the only M16x1 LH thread options for the 1911 are on the bull barrels because the standard barrel doesn't have a wide enough diameter.

I spoke with YHM about getting another piston with .578"-28 RH threads, but they told me that the ATF has put an end to that.

Perhaps a Gemtech Multi Mount will work on it? I've heard of people using the SWR trident mounts with their 9mm YHM cans, but I don't know if there is something similar for the 45?

I really don't want to wait on another 45 can for my 1911, so I am also considering just buying a first generation Cobra 45 can with the .578"-28 RH threads and pulling the piston out of it and giving the rest of the can to my SOT.

What do you guys think? Am I screwed?

Did you ask if you can have your old piston replaced with the new style?

*I'm not talking about buying a new one... but rather sending back your old style and getting the new updated style to use with the new adapters.

They basically told me I'm SOL...

email from YHM:
Sir,
Thank you for your interest in our products. Unfortunately the Universal
adapters will only work on the Cobra M2 series with our newly redesigned
mounting system. They will NOT work on an orginal Cobra sound suppressor.
The original Cobras used a threaded piston and ATF will no longer allow us
to sell them as they cosider them a componet of a suppressor, and
suppressor componets are illegal to sell or possess unless they are part
of a complete sound suppressor, so individual pistons can no longer be
sold. This is why we had to change the mounting system on the Cobra M2's
to the new Universal Adapter system. Otherwise everyone would have been
limited to only one thread with a Cobra M2 sound suppressor. The original
Cobra CANNOT be adapted to accept the new design as the rear of the
suppressor is completely different on an original Cobra versus the M2.
Unfortunately you are limited to use your suppressor only on threaded
barrels that you currently have a piston for as you can no longer purchase
seperate individually threaded pistons as ATF will NOT allow it.

Yeah it's really strange, but whatever that's ATF for ya...

I just wish I would have picked up the different threaded pistons for it back when YHM was selling them.

First, the respondant is full of it as the M2 was out before they were hit by the ATF.  Hell it was out before I bought my used Cobra a year or so ago, and I bought several pistons before the ATF visited them.  May be a different story now but the M2 is not the result of the ATF visit.  The universal adapter might be a result of it, though.  The M2 pistons are different (engagement issue into the blast baffle) but thread on pretty much the same way, I know this because my dealer ordered the wrong (M2) piston for my H&K USP40T.

You have trhee options:
1. Buy the adapter and see if it works.
2. Look for Class 3 dealers of the YHM line and see if they have any extra pistons for sale.  Many stocked them as accessories and may still have some stock.
3. Tell YHM you lost your piston and ask if they will fit it with the one you are needing if you send it to them sans piston.
