Where do you find the best mounting position for the ELR IR Illuminator when used in conjunction with an AR15 and D-740, rail mounted or on the supplied mounting base on the D-740 itself?

To each their own sorta speak.  If one is using the pressure switch, the torch is usually mounted down at the rail of the gun.  Most customers who have AR weapons mount the unit on the rails, and of course for bolt gun users where rail space may be non-existent, the torch mounted on the side of the 740 or 760 is the obvious choice.

Definitely rail mounted for me when possible.

I mount it far enough forward I don’t get any reflected light of the sights.

I use the rail mounted momentary switch I bought from Victor for operation. It’s mounted using a little piece of Velcro and it holds it securely.

On my Mdl 700 (no rails) I mount it on the scope, but really don’t like the added weight mounted high on the weapon. The illuminator isn’t all that heavy, but the Mdl 700’s are very light weapons and it doesn’t take much weight to imbalance them. But it’s very manageable…just not preferred.
