just curious if anyone on here shoots .17 hmr? I am fairly new to the round. I got real lucky, purchased a used Marlin 917vst topped off with a Leupold Century Limited Edition for 359.00 at Cabela's (they didn't catch the Leupy until I pointed it out and it was too late by that time, the scope by itself sells for 300). This thing is an absolute laser...it's ridiculous! We had a whistlepig (ground squirrel) tournament in my area this last Saturday...it was simple: one shot, one kill. I am not new to firearms, but why on earth did I not buy one of these things sooner?! I've missed out this entire time? Is there any other rimfires I should know about |

Me personally, I got rid of my 22lr for a 22 Mag. I like the extra omph that the 22 Mag offers, and mine will shoot any ammo I put through it, and shoot it well.
I think the 17 HMR is a great round, although I have yet to buy one. I would still probably pick the 22 Mag over it though due to the slightly greater energy, but for a rimfire, I would take either hands down. ETA: Congrats on the great buy |

I've had three .17HMR's and all of them have been "one shot one kill" rifles. All have been Savages. Two Accutrigger and one standard trigger model. The "POP" the gophers make when hit is amazing as is the pink mist. I really like the Hornady Varmint Express loads. |

The 5mm is a pretty good round, my brother has an old Remington that he broke out after centurion started making ammunition. Maybe it was just ahead of it's time ![]() +1 This was the shortest lived round (4 yrs) since WW2. The factory Remington loads are an absolute screamer- however they are going for a min of $40.00 for 50rds on gun broker. The Centurion stuff from Brazil is ok, but it doesn't do the damage the original Rem stuff does. I wish they'd bring it back. |

The 5mm Rem was a great round that suffered from a limited offering of firearms for it. This is not the only good round to suffer that fate. The .17 Mach 2 is dying now as its timing was off, being over shadowed by its big cousin, the .17 HMR. Meanwhile the .22 Mag is making a come back of sorts. Its been around for a very long time but has not had the press of the .17, which is derived from it.
Firearms suffer the same fate of other items, that is rise and fall of current fashion. I, for one, am glad the .22 Mag is still being seen as viable as it certainly has its usefulness. The .17 shoots very straight, as has been mentioned, but for certain size game its .22 Mag cousin is a better choice. Each caliber has its strengths as well as its limitations. What's a body to do? Simple...buy at least one of each! There is no one "perfect" firearms. The lowly .22 is the most popular caliber due to its low purchase and operational cost as well as its general usefulness for small game. Meanwhile, the .17 HMR is a delight to shoot. It offers low noise, recoils and cost compared to a larger centerfire. Perhaps too expensive, compared to a .22 LR, for day to day bulk plinking, but a joy to do certain hunting tasks with and fun to play with at target shooting. Enjoy! |

Quoted: My local club is starting rimfire shoots. I've had the Savage (w/ Accutrigger) for about five years but I've never shot it much. I recently bought a scope for it and tried to get it sighted in. I have back stops in my back yard at 30 and 130 yards. I drilled five shots through one hole at 30 yards after getting the scope dialed in, then turned to the longer range stop, and put two through the same hole. Third one was a little off but it's been pretty windy. Which ammo do you guys like through it? I thought about buying a half case on MidwayUSA ($110 for 500rds) of Hornady 17gr. After mounting the scope (Tasco 6-24x42) http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c353/AJErvin/Guns/utf-8BSU1HMDAzNjUtMjAxMTA0MTQtMjAzNS5qcGc-2.jpg Thats purdy. Mine is a savage .17. with a BSA sweet 17 on it

| I have a savage .17 and I absolutely love it. I was a little resistant to buy a .17 until I shot a friends rifle but that sold me. lets admit it sometimes things get hyped and really don't live up to it but the .17hmr at least in my opinion more than lives up to it's hype. absolute laser beam. I do agree that in some small game hunting situations the .22 mag is a better choice but for my use as a target round I Love the .17hmr |

Mine is a savage .17. with a BSA sweet 17 on it I was looking at those, but I wanted to buy locally so I could get it set up for the shoot this weekend. I know the scope I got isn't as top quality as I usually prefer, and it is not very useful at the higher power if it's anything but sunny. I would have a hard time doing much better without spending twice the money. |

I've got the Savage 93R17 with a BSA Sweet17 on it and it's my go-to gun for pest control on anything smaller than a 'yote. I run the Hornaday Varmint Express .17gr Vmax rounds ($9.99/bx of 50 shipped from Mid-South Shooter's) and it's dead-nuts accurate. I'm not usually a fan of BSA's crap-tastic chinese scopes, but I've beaten the shit out of the one I have on this rifle and the BDC works and RTZs every time. Fun little gun... so fast you can see the target take the hit before you blink inside of 100yds. Bagged two crows and about a dozen grackels with mine today. Love it! |

Savage shooter here with a SSS trigger on it....the only thing wrong with the original rifle was the trigger. Put the SSS one on, and it tightens groups up dramatically.
Absolutely the most accurate rim fire i have ever shot. Although my custom 10/22 is pretty close....i still like the power advantage of the 17hmr |
