| Anyone got one? What do you think? I haven't had a chance to shoot one yet. They look interesting since they apparently shoot flatter than .22lr. Any specific recommendations as to bolt guns in this caliber? |
| i was in a local shop shootin the shit with the owner and he said the savage bolt 17 rims were flyin off the shelvs. here in iowa thier isnt even that much to shoot with them, but that hasnt hampered their popularity. i have also seen alot of NEF break action 17s floating around. |

I bought a Marlin. Inexpensive blue/ stained wood. Mounted a weaver15x with a/o on bkl mounts. Had to do a trigger job. Results are worth it. Hot rimfire for calm conditions. Watch out 22lr, this is fun. I reccomend caution spending too much for one. You are still under the control of the ammo makers and with good press innitially, ammo quality, as has been seen with other rimfire stuff, is not etched in stone. btw, the marlin shoots same off a bag or a bipod and accuracy bipod supported is what impressed me. It works good. |

I have a Marlin 17VS on my "list". Ive handled several and fired one, sweet shooting rifles! Rofle Basix makes a drop in adjustable trigger for $79.95+S&H. They're awesome on small varmits and good for long headshots on squirrels, rabbits, and (where legal) grouse etc. Check out Varmit Al's website, he has a whole section on testing the .17HMR from way back when no one could get a gun OR ammo! Great suff, plus a video clip. www.cctrap.com/~varmint/17hmr.htm |

I have the Marlin in SS. Very accurate and fun. No need to replace the trigger though, either cut a loop or so off of the larger of the two trigger springs or as I did remove it and replace with a ballpoint pen spring. oh yeah, ten shot groups@100yds hovering around the 1" mark. |
Can't figure out why Ruger doesn't make this model right now in their semi auto. They have the 17HMR in their lever and bolt guns only so far. I assume that conversion uses unmodified 22WMR rotary mags? |
| Ammo has been hard to find in some places. I heard from some distributors that Remington and CCI will be selling it soon. I sold a NEF break action to a friend of mine and he is crazy about it. He told me that he shot a crow at approx 225 yards and rolled it up. |
Who the heck knows with Ruger? It took them far too many years before they finally came out with a 22Mag 10/22. |
|
A local shop had a Volquartsen (SP?) 10-22mag to 17HMR conversion on the shelf. Stainless HB with an optics rail. Synthetic stock. $995. Looked like a very nice rifle, but not that nice. Seems like darned near every vendor had a 17HMR rifle or pistol at a local gunshow last weekend. |

here's a link that has test info on the 17 www.cctrap.com/~varmint/17hmr.htm |
| I got a Marlin .17VS a few weeks ago. Heavy barrel, pretty stock. $349 The trigger sucks as bad as any factory trigger, but other than that, it's a real shooter. I put a Nikon 3-9x40 scope on it, had it shooting 1/2MOA out of the box. I'm really impressed with it so far. Warm weather is coming fast here, starting to see some groundhogs. I'm going out Sunday to hammer a few of them. I'll use the .17HMR this time, because I'm dying to know how it does. If you go to Marlin's website, there's quite a few posts about this caliber. I've heard pros and cons about how well it does on hogs at 100+ yards. I'll try to remember to post a "field report" for you after the weekend. |

Ruger has adds out for the 10/17 but I have yet to see a gun that isn't a barrel swap .22mag to .17hmr. The CCI's are shipping. I've got a couple boxes. No word on the remington's. Check out www.rimfirecentral.com/forums for more info on the .17hmr |
And like it won't toss a .223 around like a ragdoll in a stiff breeze? Sheesh, talk about caliber bigotry around here..I love 7.62x51, but you don't seem me going on about how a stiff breeze will push it all around... Figured the AR crowd would be going for the Smaller Is Better argument. Hell, y'all did back in the 60's, when the AR/M16 was first handed around... Asbestos suit, ON! ![]() |

if you're shooting the .17 at typical rimfire ranges, wind is not a problem. Remember what the .17 is...it's a more accurate, more powerful, flatter-shooting RIMFIRE. It's not meant to be used past 200 yards really. SEMI AUTO .17 HMR's The rimfirecentral.com folks usually convert a 10/22 mag to .17 hmr with a green mountain 77/17 barrel and a shim and washer set that...coincidentally...I supply to a lot of people. This is a precision-ground and heat-treated spacer that sets the barrel depth in the receiver properly to minimize case head expansion (not to mention make the 77/17 barrel, which has a longer shank, fit the 10/22 mag action.) Accuracy is outstanding - have put 10 rounds into 1.5" at 200 yds with my 10/22 Mag - .17 conversion. If you are interested in making this conversion yourself, send me an e-mail or instant message. I can also supply the shim set if you need it. Check this out: http://www.artifex.ws/hummer.html |

The more I have read about this new round, the more I am glad I just bought one today. Our local gunshop had several Marlin V17 in stock for $225 each (no scope). This shop actually has some unique sales every Sunday. This weekend (Easter) he had Yugo SKS for $150. He also had a "hunt" for a sale which he has done before. If you are on their e-mail list, he sends you the sale. This hunt had (3) serial numbers of guns. If you found the serial number, you could purchase the gun for 50% off! So I got the Marlin V17 for $112.50 + tax NIB!!!! Can't wait to shoot it!! Rebel 13 |
All in jest It all depends on velocity. And it appears that little rimfire thing has the velocity to back it up. I'm considering getting one...alas, I have several other close-range things (M1 Carbine, etc) that tickle me pink. I'm not hard-bent on accuracy. Too many hangovers and other things get in the way of that. However...for a fun high-powered rimfire that'll equal my .223 toys...one has to pause and examine. I am. |
WRONG!!! The .17 is a tiny projectile, but it's size is actually a benefit. Small bullet = Less surface area exposed to wind = Less wind drift. High velocity = Less flight time = Less wind drift. My out-of-the-box Ruger 77/17 out shoots my $1000.00 10/22. The .17 HRM is a sweet cartridge. Now if I could just find a reliable source of ammo at a fair price! |
There you go! Remington and CCI are starting to put out some .17HMR ammo from what I hear. It's funny though some areas are saturated with ammo or rifles, some haven't seen either! |
|
I for one don't get it. It's neat idea but I'm just not certain what the purpose is. When I think rimfire I'm thinking cheap shooting and the 17 is anything but cheap. If I need something more than a 22 lr, then its on to centerfire. Remember the success of the 5mm Remington? My guess is in two to three years the 17 will be in the same boat. Yet another version of the firearms industry inventing something we don't need but will sell guns. Been a lot of that lately, ie the short mags and the ultra mags. |
I understand what you are saying, but there is a purpose for the .17. It is an excellent varmint round for use in areas where a centerfire is too much gun for the job. With today's urban sprawl, not everyone can safely use a .22-250 or even a .223. And because of the makeup of the little .17 bullet, richochet is almost non-existent. You certainly can't say that for the .22 LR or even .22 Mag. I look at the .22 LR as mostly a 'Plinker' round. The .17 HMR was designed from the start to be a varmint/small game round. The ammo ain't cheap, but you're probably not gonna go out and blast away 500 rounds at tin cans like you would with the LR. I think for the reasons outlined above, this cartridge is here to stay. I know of 7 or 8 manufacturers making guns chambered in .17 and three manufacturers cranking out ammo. This doesn't look to be a fad. As far as *need*, I don't think that many of us could say that we only buy things that we need, especially when it comes to firearms. If need were the deciding factor, we could eliminate 98% of the calibers out there. And don't look at the manufacturers selling guns/ammo as a bad thing. The more people we have shooting and spending $$$ on firearms, the more pull we have in D.C. As always, MONEY TALKS! Happy Shooting!! |
