I am new to reloading so please bear with me......I am preparing some rounds in anticipation of my arrival of a 550B.  Anyways....I resized and deprimed a couple pieces of .223.  It is once fired federal from our security range.  When I put it in my Dillon case gauge, the primer end measures fine but the neck (bullet end) comes up short.  Is this a problem?

All the federal brass is a little short. If you measure almost any other once fired brass it won't be short. It will be OK to reload. This is a known situation with new federal brass. Not to worry.

Most loading manuals say 1.760 for case length, but most guys recommend trimming down to 1.750.   What's the Federal brass measuring at?

1.760 is MAX––-1.740 in MIN––-most trim in between(1.750). By the way that's for.223,not for 5.56mm. The MAX for a 5.56mm chamber is longer than 1.760.

And to answer question––-not a problem as long as case lenght in between 1.760 and 1.740.

I will have to report back when my calipers come in to get a better measurement.  Thanks for the information!

The 223 case loaded to higher pressure is a 5.56. Nothing different about the case between the two.

Chamber for a 5.56 has a little longer throat than a 223 chamber.

As far as case length is concerned they are the same.

FC cases are always short when once fired, around 1.740 ish. You can load them at this length.

Trim to length is 1.750, max length is 1.760.

Go up to the top of the page and read the FAQ's and other info up there.

Read up on 223 FC cases in the "Useful Threads".

Win or LC is much better brass.

Here is what I picked up from our range.  It was all packaged as federal IIRC.

The two on the left are Lake City with crimped primers. The one on the right is obviously Federal. Don't know what kind of packaging you were looking at, but they are not the same manufacturer.
Even the LC's are from different lots.

Federal has produced some lots of American eagle with LC brass.

Shouldn't be a problem.  I think someone measured the FC brass in the area of 1.73"  This just means you won't have to worry about trimming it for up to 3 loadings or more.

I personally love this FC brass for that reason.  I hate trimming and will avoid it at all costs.
