Is it dangerous to thumb load .22 rounds like a centerfire cartridge? Could the friction between the rounds be enough to set one off?

No.
You need to slam something on the rim.

Okay, thanks...I think one thing the GSG-5 could really use to further the MP5 look would be solid sided mags...why is it every .22 has a spring handle on the side of the mag?

Holding down the spring makes it easier to load. The same with mag loaders for any type of magazine.
Loading mags can really hurt your thumbs!...

22 pistols use it because it makes things easier and there is plenty of room inside a 22 handle. Try loading the GSG mags without using the spring follower and see what happens lol.

Picked up some CCI .22 and tried loading the mag tonight...its a helluva lot harder to load those things than I expected...never undestimate the power of small smoother brass whilst trying to stack them...
