I mislaid the little set screws that fill in the scope mounting holes atop my son's 10/22. I called Ruger to find out about getting some replacements... they wanted $2 per screw PLUS $3.50 shipping (thankfully not per screw). I thought this outrageous for a part that most decent companies would just throw in an envelope and send for free. Ruger margins must be getting wafer thin if they have to nickel and dime their customers like this. Needless to say, I declined their offer and will live with the "cooling ports" as they are .

If you can wait til I get home today, I may have some of those screws laying around. I had several 10/22s and put scopes on them all, so I know I pulled those screws out. If I have them ill send them to you. Lemme know if you want me to look for them

The threads on those holes are 6-48 threads (standard scope mount threads). You should be able to find those screw at a quality hardware store, probably not at a major chain store. Or you can order from Brownells or a similar store (Brownells has them for48pcs for $8.99)

$2 is nothing.

My washer lost a special left-hand bolt, I went to a dealer... he looked it up and list price was $35.

That's not too bad. Any time you deal with a fairly specialized fastener you pay more. When you need to go through the OEM, its more. Stuff like that usually goes one of two ways. The part is so cheap that it isn't worth charging for, since it costs more to bill than it is worth, or it is so cheap that billing and handling make up most of the cost in the 2nd case you get a $2 screw because they're not in the business of selling screws. The next step is that they no longer sell thescrew and it is only available as a "scope mounting kit" with plug screws, mount screws, and rail for $19.99.

I have never found 6-48 at a hardware store. It is only used on guns.

My bad. I didn't realize that it was a firearms specific thread until looking a little further. Either way You can still get 48 from Brownells for under $10. Buy a pack like that and it will last a lifetime. Or buy a box of screws that are firearm specific and be happy later when you need them.

It does suck that these cost so much. I understand the feeling.

Just put a scope base on it––––you don't have to put a scope on it.

Nah, that's an idea that irritates my sight picture.  Midway has them too.

Next time this happens, drop by the local gunshop that sells and mounts scopes.

Two local shops here must have five thousand each of the filler screws.
