Someday I would like to get a really nice bolt gun, and have been trying to settle on what round to go with.  The .338 Lapua really caught my attention but is out of my price range.  However, the .338 federal, 338. rem ultra mag, and .338 win mag are a lot more reasonable.  I was just curious about how these three rounds stack up.  So, any input would be very helpful.

Lots of comments about use of the 338 WinMag and comparable calibers for hunting n PA in this thread.

If you could reload your own, 338-06 might be the most reasonable choice of all as it would allow you to shoot 338 projectiles with a reasonable powder charge out of any 3006 magazine rifle.

I only have experience with the 338 win.  It is a good cartridge, but it is belted, which reduces capacity some.  I wound up selling it because it burns about 75 grains of powder with a 225 grain

For 95% of American hunting, I expect that a 338 federal would be great.

If I were going to buy another 338, it'd be

338-06
338 Win
338 Lapua
340 Weatherby

In that order

338 Win would probably carry the day, however, simply because there are a lot more rifles in this than the others.  A 60s vintage Sako would come to mind as the rifle of choice.

the 338 federal will work in a short action rifle,

the 338wm, 338-06 and I believe the 338lapua in a standard long action,

the ultra mag uses the magnum length action of the 375H&H sized cartridges.

what I've read about and published balistics makes the 338 fed round look promissing for a light mountain rifle,

but if I was having a rifle made I'd pick the 338-06, with the proper loads its damn close to 300wm power levels with a much lighter powder charge and 06' cases are much cheaper to buy if your a reloader,

I think A-Square is making factory loaded ammo for the 338-06, but it's damn expensive, I don't know if theres any other factory ammo made for it.

Weatherby loads 338-06, IIRC.

Thats what I would get.

Or a Kimber 84M in .338 Federal.
