I've just started loading this caliber with satisfactory results.  I've been using Win 231 (4.4 gr.) and X-treme plated bullets at 147 gr.  These average about 989 fps on the chrono and seem to be relatively 'soft' shooters.

The range of loads I've been able to track down for this combination are generally from 4.0 to 4.9 grains of 231.

Since 231 has been a bit scarce of late, I was wondering if anyone has used 700X for this caliber and bullet type?  I've got plenty of 700X at present and thought it might be worth a try, but I can't find any recipes for this powder/bullet combination.

I chrono'd some 147gr Gold Dot handloads just shy of 1200 FPS....

Never mind these was 38 Super +P cases, 3N37 and CCI-400 in a 5" stainless and ramped Nowlin barrel..

124gr FMJ with 8.2gr 3N37 make major in 5" barrel  (ramped barrel for USPSA /safety reasons)

Who made barrel /what type barrel.. if std COLT barrel, then stick wiith book loads,, go aftermarket  barrel as they cut to headspace off case mouth like 9/40/45 instead of using the semi-rim for headspaicng,, and if you to hot rod the Super, then look into going with ramped barrel to support brass and feed really slick

It is a factory colt barrel. Factory all around on this pistol.

The reason I posted is because I've only found one source using 700X for .38 super.  Finding a 'book' load for this powder and bullet has been a challenge.  I wanted to see if any one else has tried the combination (or similar) that I mentioned in my original post.

Thanks

I have 2007 IMR free handbook... not much help except 4gr  700x with  115gr XTP at 955 and 22,900 PSI.. that not pushing 9x19 territory which is where the Super +P works at,, sounds like a straight 38acp load to me (pre-38 Super +P)

Got chrono ?    700x or other fast powder not be my first choice, but in today market, kinda got to play with what you can get,, you not going to make full on Super +P with it,, but you can still load the weaker 38acp loads

Thanks,

I'm not looking to make +P loads.  Just practice/plinking stuff.  I've got chrono and MAY try some loads starting low.  I've got enough 231 for now that it will suffice for the present.  Need to get some more powders in the repertoire.  Very tough right now with powders, as we all know.
