I didnt see them answered when I quickly skimmed the FAQ's thread.

1. Why does the SBRs overall length extended matter? (if its too short they wont accept it or something?)
2. how are you supposed to measure the overall extended length if your not supposed to have the rifle configured as an SBR prior to completing the paperwork?

ETA: third real quick question. What if I move while the paperwork is being processed? I would be moving to another state that is ok with SBRs, but do I just need to notify the ATF of a change of address?

1. Why does the SBRs overall length extended matter? (if its too short they wont accept it or something?) Any shoulder-fired firearm with a rifled bore must have a minimum overall length of 26 inches. Less than 26" OA and it is an SBR, even if the barrel is over 16 inches.
2. how are you supposed to measure the overall extended length if your not supposed to have the rifle configured as an SBR prior to completing the paperwork? Measure it as it is, then subtract the amount you are going be cutting it down.

However, as a rule of thumb, an AR15 with a collapsible stock and an 11.5" barrel is 30.5". So if you're going to a 10.5"  barrel, OA is 29.5", etc.
