Basically I may need to load for something with a .44-40 barrel, but chambered for the .44 Magnum cartridge. The bullets have a slight difference in diameter; about .427 in to .429 in I think.
Since they are similar, I wondered whether it would be possible to use the .44-40 bullet in the .44 Magnum case? If this is a completely retarded idea, I apologise. It isn't something I've ever had to consider doing, or heard of being done. It may turn out not to be necessary - the rifle may have the correct barrel. Thanks. |

But yeah, ideally, you'd slug the barrel and shoot bullets sized to fit. |

The .427 bullets may not seat and crimp securely in the 44 Mag case which used .430 cast bullets.
If they spin in the case after loading, they are definitely too loose. Like mentioned you really should slug your barrel. You may have to try shooting .430 bullets, starting low and working up carefully. I just realized you didn't mention jacketed or cast bullets. My answer pertains to cast bullets. |
