i am trying to come up with a way to mount an aimpoint micro or other type of micro dot sight to the m1a scout/socom that will co-witness or at least provide good cheek weld without going with the ultimak top rail.

looking at the SA mount on an m1a scout it seems like you could make it to sit lower for these micro dot sights, low enough to provide the oh so desired co-witness we are all looking for. i am surprised larue or sei have not come up with some kind of cut down top rail piece that would bolt right to the springfield lower mount?

unless im missing something.

anyways, here are some pics, let me know what you guys think and discuss.

I agree with you OP. I have an Ultimak rail on my VLTOR Scout. It gets hot after a coupla mags. I would like a low profile rail the same length as the stock rail at the same height as the Ultimak rail. Then I could have used the stock handguard vice installing a custom bottom rail for a Magpul AFG.

Midwest Industries offers something like what you have described,
but it doesn't position the micro T-1 as low as the Ultimak M8 does.
The It's been my experience that the Ultimak M8 and the new SHG
from M14.CA are the best forward mounts available for the M14/M1A.

it seems like it would be possible to do just from looking at the scout mount. just not sure if it would be low enough to co-witness/get good weld

interesting, thanks for posting this. have you had hands on experience with this setup or no? looks like it might be just what i am looking for. i just dont like the idea of the full handguard being used to mount your optic as opposed to the springfield style that clamps on to the barrel

Yep, I had one and sold it because the Aimpoint didn't sit as low as it did on my Ultimak.
It did co-witness, but it was more like the lower 25% instead of the lower 3rd. YRMV.

cool. nice rifle. i am trying to keep my scout handguard if i can if anything for aesthetic reasons more than anything, i dont like the full rail on the top especially when it is not fully modernized like your rifle. is that a sei can?

It is an older Fisher/SEI can that was recently updated to Wind Talker specs by SEI.
The coupler, baffles and end cap are new.

H20 man do you have any pictures of the t1 on the midwest mount on your rifle? i cannot find anything on the web

That SAI mount is trash. Anything based on that design is trash. The Ultimak is the best alternative but I believe it falls short as well. The main issue is heat. Good luck in your endeavors. I went down this road a couple months back and ended up just getting rid of the mounts altogether because none were satisfactory.
