Wondering what a 50 cal will do to a backstop? My friends range has dirt mounds at each distance out to 600 yards with 4'x4' and 4'x8' sheets of plywood in frames to staple the targets to. What will hardball ammo do to the plywood if I staple targets to it instead of using steel plates? I don't want to tear up his back stops is why I ask.

I have 1/2" plywood on my target frame and have shot a lot of 50 into it.
Just like every other caliber, it punches holes in it and if you shoot enough it will need to be replaced. My berm is dirt with every old log, limb and branch that falls on my farm. i no longer burn, I just pile it on the berm. Just be careful shooting at flat angles. .50s will skip and ricochet over if shot into the ground in front of the berm. Mine is a downhill shot, which helps. |
| I have a stack of large tractor tires filled with chunks of concrete and dirt. They work great as a back stop and have 5' hight with about 4 foot width. I put my targets in front of it on plywood and have steel gongs that I shoot at with everything else. Most are made out of AS500 steel and don't want to ruin them so I don't shoot them with the 50. I did one day try shooting a 7/8: gong made of regular steel and the API ammo punch clean holes through it. I don't mess with that I've put several hundred rounds of 50 bmg through the tires without any trouble of them going all the way through. |
