I recently bought a Rem 870 express super mag combo. I bought it for skeet and home defense/ target . It came with a 26" choke barrel and a 20" fully rifled. My question is....... How bad of a pattern would it be to shoot buckshot through the fully rifled barrel? Is it necessary to buy another barrel for HD buckshot? I would rather not buy another barrel. But If necessary, I will. I don't hunt. So the only reason I would ever shoot buckshot would be in a HD situation. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is a repost question. UNS |

A rifled barrel will cause the buckshot to scatter wildly, and not give any kind of group or pattern. However, in a REAL Home Defense situation, this might not be all bad. True, the shot scatters and isn't effective at any distance, INSIDE THE HOUSE this might actually be an advantage. A good rule of thumb on buckshot is, it spreads "about" 1 inch per 1 yard of distance from the barrel. In other words, at the typical distance of a house, this means the pattern will be about 6 inches in diameter. Inside a house, you'd like the shot to spread MORE. There used to be a special shotshell that was designed to scatter the shot at closer ranges. Your rifled barrel just MIGHT work well at CLOSE range. You'll have to test fire some buckshot at inside the house ranges to determine just what you've got. Also remember, the barrel will lead up and foul VERY quickly, and will be difficult to clean. You're best bet however, is to buy a smooth bore barrel for HD use. 18" barrels can be bought on gun forums if you advertise, and Mossberg makes inexpensive barrels to fit the Remington 870. |

Yeah, I suggest you get an 18 inch barrel from Mossberg. Cabelas has them for about $90 www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml?id=0005579212148a&navAction=push&navCount=1&indexId=cat20805&podId=0005579&catalogCode=XD&parentId=cat20805&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml.1_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712&hasJS=true Go down to the bottom of the page. |
Mr. F Thanks for the link. I noticed that it says. "All barrels are slug barrels" for the 870. Does that mean they are only for slugs? |
