What do you guys think the best height for a bench is?  I'm about to build a work bench and I'm looking to see what everyone uses.  I'm going to go with a 550B and possibly the strong mount.  I was thinking of a bench height of 40".  Reading B.Enos' site, the strong mount will raise the press 8.5".  As of right now, I don't plan on sitting at the bench.

ETA: I'm 6'.  I'm thinking 72"x22"x40"

Thats where mine is at... it was a craftsman and I am 6'4" and with the strong mount it is just right..

may change the handle with on of the nicer ones.

Good luck and Pic's!!!!

I think 40 inches would work well.  I built mine 38 inches high, and as I sit on a stool, the height is perfect.  I certainly would not want it lower. ( than the 38 inches )

I like work bench's to be at about 48" myself. last one I built was made out of 3/4 plywood and 4" post. two levels. two sections of 8' by 2' screwed together for a total length of 16'. then its screwed to the wall studs. I then added a  another end section that was deeper to make it L shaped. it weighed a ton and had zero movement. you could put several engine blocks on it,if you wanted too. poly ureathaned it all too

My bench is kitchen counter height.

I recently finished my fourth loading bench (over 40 years of loading).  It is 42" high.  Stools can be gotten for "bar" height tables –– some are even adjustable.

At 42", I can assure you it is NOT too high.

About at the height of your knuckles when you are standing relaxed in front of it

40" works great!

Haha, I've got monkey arms.  That bench'll be 2ft high

I like that bench above.  Are there any benefits to leaving some overhang?  I'm also going to bolster underneath like E5K's - http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m149/adamkusmc/100_2594.jpg

that's a question really that only you can answer , I've got 2 of different heights and neither are just right for all the presses on them, the 1050 bench is right for it , but wrong for the 650, the LCT bench is wrong for the Stars

My reloading bench is 32 inches, I sit to reload.

My work bench is 37 inches. Perfect height to stand and work on guns for me.

I'm 5' 11".

I think I'll be going with 40".  I figure worst case, if it's too tall and isn't working out for me, I can just flip it on it's side and cut the legs.  I'd rather have that option than it being too short

Mine's 42", which works well for me with a bar stool (27" seat height). I can also work on guns comfortably standing up (I'm 6' 2").

Well thought out plan, I like it.

I used a leg height of 38 inches with a 1.75" thick surface, so I'm right at about 40" and it seems perfect without the strong mount.  I think with the strong mount, 40" would be too tall.  I'm 6'4"

I stand and reload with the strong mount on a 42". If it were 2" or so shorter I would have to bend over a little to complete the stroke, but with monkey arms you shouldn't have any problems . I'm 6'1"

High enough so you don't have to bend your body when the press handle is at the top of its stroke.

42" for me.

Still have some work to do but I'm going out of town for a bit.  Pretty solid but I'll be securing it to the wall.  It ended up being 24" wide, 72" long, 39" (40 on the doubled plywood) tall.  Seems to be at a good height for me but we'll see when I order from Enos this week.  I still need to finish cutting the bottom plywood and making some small adjustments.

Any of you guys stained your bench?  I'm not looking for perfection but I don't want the wood soaking up oils, cleaners, etc.  I was thinking of throwing on a light coat of stain.  I'm in the process of sanding it too.  I wanted to take the sharp edges off the sides.  Any other suggestions?

Oh and I bought a Dewalt drill....man I've been missing out on drill awesomeness.  I was using an old, cheap Craftsman before.  I never needed a good drill (only hung pictures, etc).  After some initial cursing and bitching, I sprung for an expensive drill.  It makes a huge difference.

After staining, coat with 3 coats of polyurethane for a lasting finish.

Stain alone will be dull and will still soak up liquids.

My stained and 'poly'd bench with melamine top.

Build some drawers and shelfs also.

Above is actually the normal rule of thumb for workbenches.

Probably about right then.

That has been a woodworking and metal working bench height rule of thumb for a long time.

I had no idea it was so low.  I prefer not to stoop over what I do.  Given that I won't be wood or metal working, I think I'll be fine.  If I ever decide that it's too tall, I'll just chop it down some.

I just measured by holding a tape measure. Came out to be 27ish inches.  I think I'll pass on that rule of thumb.  Looking at the work bench thread, I don't see very many short benches.

My bench is 41 1/2"  Dillon 650 and 650 strong mount.   The bench height was chosen after assembling the 650 and mount and stacking shims until the handle was at the perfect height at the top and the bottom of the stroke.
