What kind of stuff is in the barrel? Shooting it and cleaning it will get a lot out. Naturally there can be stuff in there that prevents shooting it. Dennis Jenkins

Howster, What kinda "stuff"? What kinda bore paste? I use JB Bore Shine (Brownells). Rub some paste into a patch, then a drop or 2 of Kroil to wet it. Use a bore guide to avoid getting the stuff on the barrel lugs and chamber. I short stroke it til it's near the muzzle and then stop when the tip of the jag just reaches the end. I mark the cleaning rod so I can then do full length swipes (about 8 or 10). I follow with several patches soaked with Kroil, then a few dry patches. With a new-to-me milsurp, I may repeat the process one or more times. I then fire the rifle, but keep the number of rounds to about 10 to avoid excessive fouling. After 2 or 3 of these procedures (shoot/clean, shoot/clean), accuracy and ease of cleaning improve greatly. My M48 benefited from this. Strangely, my "unissued" Finn M39 took the most work to condition the bore, but is now one of the best milsurp shooters I have. What flavor is your 8mm (M48, K98?) X |
i've cleaned this barrel and still have stuff. dont know what the stuff is. i know how to clean a rifle. the bore paste is made by break free. i've heard shoot it then clean but im picky and shoot only clean bores. this is one of my first c and r and dont want it to blow up in my face.

Is the "stuff" still coming out on the patches? Could be the bore is frosted, or just dark (pitting). If so, it may still shoot OK, but could tend to foul quickly. In any case, a shoot/clean program will usually bring it around to a useable condition. I thought I knew how to clean a rifle 'til I started buying milsurp stuff. Then I had to learn a whole new set of tricks. Good luck and good shooting, X |
