Well I broke the decapping rod.  I am using a rockchucker press, .223 rcbs FL dies and I had a problem with one piece of brass so I didn’t force it and a few minutes later I came to another piece of brass and it was hard so I pulled a little harder on the handle and I shouldn’t have…  I looked at it and the two are the same head stamp “223 REM” and on the top is a small square with a squiggly,  sorry the pics are crappy.

So I guess I send it back to rcbs?? Or am I sol?

With regards to the pictures, try using the macro function on your camera.  It will allow you to take in focus pictures closer up.

Try shining a flashlight in the top of the case and see if it's berdan primed.

Unscrew the expander off the rod. If you have the decapping pins with heads, you can get a pack of five pins here:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=404281

If the pins have no heads (straight pins)
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=321323

If you don't want to use Midway, almost any gunshop carrying reloading supplies will have these. I always keep spares.

First off, you bent a decapping PIN-which is easily replaceable.  The expander button actually screws onto that rod to hold the pin in place.  And pins are very inexpensive to boot.  This sort of thing happens from time to time, whether it's because of a rock in a case or a Berdan primed case (which is what I think your problem is).

Does the "square with a squiggle" look like the one at the top of this case?

That's a Barnaul-made case, and it's guaranteed to be Berdan primed.  Probably a "Golden Bear" case...

Call RCBS.  I had that happen to me once.  Gave them a call and I had 4 pins and a new rod in the mail a few days later, no charge.

+1  RCBS will send you a pack of pins for free.  Just call them up and they will take care of you like you were family.

The macro function has a flower for the icon.

Keep looking. Or heaven forbid, read the instructions.

Don't feel bad, everyone breaks decapping pins.

Shine a light down the neck of your brass,

Boxer on left, Berdan on right. Two small holes = Berdan.

Then you can pick out the Berdan (death to decapping pins) primed cases.

Good luck.

You can buy a packet of about 20 pins from a decient gun shop for just a few bucks.

I was having this problem until I switched to the Lee universal decapper die. Now I use it then run the brass through the tumbler. The media helps clean out the primer pocket.

+1

I like to decap as soon as I return from the range and tumble ASAP. Lee's decapping die is designed to give, rather than break. It's around $10.00 or so and worth every cent.

When you actually resize the decapper can knock any stubborn media left stuck in the flash hole. That doesn't take a lot of strength.

I bent my decapper pin and rod for my .223 yesterday.  I called RCBS this morning.  I have a new rod and some pins coming.  No charge.  I sure do like working with RCBS.

I am considering getting a universal decapper though.

If the customer made the mistake, why should RCBS pay for it?

If I am not mistaken, RCBS has a lifetime warranty.

Shouldn't that cover all parts of the die(s) for normal use?

If you break a Craftsman wrench on a tough bolt, do you go buy a new one, or send it back?  I have them replace it, lifetime, means lifetime.

Oh good Lord, those pins are a consumable.  You should have spare box of them lying around.

I also have several spare whole rods in my tool kit, as its pretty easy to bend those too.

RCBS is a bitch to get a hold of by phone.............I leave messages for them and they take care of my requests...........Punching out 223 primers mainly the crimped in ones are a bitch........I use the lyman universal decapping die.......this is one tough MF'er.......punches those boys right out and the way it is made it is virtually indestructable.........

Your mistaken, RCBS does not have a unlimited lifetime warranty. Their customer service makes it seem they do.
