this idea popped into my head today (happens alot). things im wondering are as follows:

what does it take to put a new bbl on a mauser
action? does action + stock + barrel make a complete gun?

what kind of accuracy might be achived with a mauser large-ring action (drilled and tapped) with new stock and new 308 heavy barrel?

wheres a good place to get mauser stuff?

thanks

I recently made a .375-06 on a Mauser Action.  I had a gunsmith in our club mount the barrel, headspace, etc... 1 MOA or better.

corelite and Fajen Stocks, Adams and Bennett barrels.  They have 308 heavy barrels and matching drop in stocks.

I used a drop in Dayton Traistor(sp?) trigger, and I am very pleased with it.

I did exactly what you did several years ago.
What I learned was the following.

I purchased 3 1909 Chilean mausers for a song at $100.00

1.DO NOT GET A CHEAP BARREL

I opted for a heavy profile ER Shaw barrel.
they look nice but shoot so so.

2. Don't get a cheap drop in trigger.
just say no to WILLIAMS

I purchased the lightest drop in trigger they made and it still takes 4 men and a boy to make it break.

3.stocks well that's a personal thing just make sure its at least pillar bedded.

I had mine inletted and custom fitted by hand to me by a local stock maker from a fajen varmenter stock with lacewood accents.

4. Remove the stock bolt knob and have it replaced with a new angled one.

do it, trust me you wont regret it.

All in all it was very fun to do. For some reason I enjoy putting things together more than actually using them.

If I had to do it over I would get a remington 40x action screw a black star barrel and A jewel(sp? trigger set at a few ounces.
Avoiding the mauser project all together.

ill post a pic of it later .

I've been toying with this same idea for Years. I just need suggestions on a good mauser action for a .223-.22-250 sized shooter. I know that most likely I'll need to rework/remake the bolt face to do it. Anyone out there done this?

I have 2 German 98's. 1 is done in 30-06, using one of those "new in white" barrels from Gunparts..set in a Bell-Carlson, epoxied the main receiver lugs, receiver fits nice & snug to stock, float the barrel, and a Timney trigger @ 3#...Deer rifle.

#2 is done with a Douglas fat barrel, 1x12 twist in a 22-250. I wanted a little more spin than the 1x14. It is set in a Ramline Plastic stock, Timney trigger & 3#...ground hog gun. You hear "THHHHWWWWAACKK"....BOOM!

.22-250 won't require a bolt face change, .223 obviously will.  If it were me, I'd stick to the .22-250 idea.  With either cartridge, you may be looking at modifying the feed rails/ramp to get it to feed properly.
I'm in the middle of two Mauser projects myself.  A .25-06 and a .338-06, both built on Turk actions.

Leave the rails alone, they'll feed, need to be kinda sharp/quick in chambering, because the 22-250 round is so short, you'll see and learn to work with it.

Custom Mausers are my forte!  I have built quite a few of them for customers and for myself over the years.  Right now Sarco has Parker Hale .308 bull bbls for $35 each.  They came off of rifles that had bad receivers so they shitcanned the receivers and sold the bbls.  I have done 3 rifles with these bbls, and they shoot great!  Mine will do 1/2-3/4 MOA.

There is too much to list on what to do when building a custom Mauser, but you can call me any day except sun or mon toll free 1-877-726-4345 and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.  Ask for Dan.

I have had good accuracy with the Adams and Bennet barrels I've used.  Laminated stocks tend to be good and rigid too.  I would suggest using a VZ-24, 98-22, or german 98 action to start with.  I also reccomend using a gunsmith who laps in the bolt lugs and trues the boltface prior to assembling.  The vz-24 and 98-22 should feed the .308 cartridge without modification of the feed rails.  I charge $85 to rebarrel and cut the chamber, but that's the price here in Alabama, it may be higher/lower where you live.  A good bedding job, an adjustable trigger, drilled and tapped for bases, and a forged bolt handle and you'll be ready to go!

That's good to know.  I'd considered doing a .22-250 on one of the Turks, but a couple of local 'smiths told me I "might" have to alter the feed rails.  That's why I decided to stick with -06 based cartridges for my first couple projects.

No biggie.  I really "need" a .25-06 and a .338-06 anyway.

Headspacing the bolt/barrel is best left to the knowledgeable and you seem to have found a few on here.
I have a Hotchkiss repro made from a Moisin-Nagant action (.40-65), and a Sharps-Lee repro built from an Enfield No.1 mark III action (.42-60 aka .444 Marlin). Both are very nice and built for me by a competent rifle maker.
You could start such a project and get gunsmith help as required.

I've also been thinking about doing this for awhile.  I'd like to use one of the $57 cracked stock VZ-24s that FAC is selling for the receiver.  Mate it up with a .308 barrel and a synthetic stock of some sort, and mount some decent optics on it.  Just wasn't sure what else would have to be done/changed for this to work and didn't know if there were many gunsmiths that would do this sort of work.

Well, you'll probably want to put in a good trigger.  If you're mounting a scope on it, you'll need to have the bolt handle forged, or cut off and a new one welded on to clear the scope.  A new low-swing safety on the bolt (again, to clear the scope).

Am I forgetting something, guys?

Mattsd:  If you enjoy working on rifles or want something that isn’t readily available, by all means go for it.

However, if you see this as a way of getting a nice rifle without spending much money, you may be unpleasantly surprised.

I strongly suggest you price everything out first.

www.brownells.com has a great selection of Mauser supplies.
