| Hey everyone, I'm new to reloading and need advice. I loaded up some 308 and upon sizing I didn't run the cases all the way through as I have Lee dies with built in decapper and I'm using primed brass. It worked great for a few set up loads but I dont think i ran the next ones in far enough as when I seated a bullet I can see a bit of it scraped off as if the necks didn't fully open for resizing and the ID was too small. I'm currently looking for a FL resizing die without a decapper pin but I'm looking at the loads I made. Are they OK to shoot with the bullet being so tight in the neck to strip some of the jacket off? Also anyone have a good brand for a full length resizing die without a decapping pin? |

Sizing die is suppose to reduce the neck diameter for good neck tension. I'm currently looking for a FL resizing die without a decapper pin but I'm looking at the loads I made. I think your problem is you did not chamfer the case mouth before bullet seating. Also anyone have a good brand for a full length resizing die without a decapping pin? Get a RCBS sizing die, the decapping pin is removable. |

One step at a time...
If you had primed brass, and you ran it through the FL size die, did you raise or remove the decap pin? The "didn't run the cases all the way through" is a little confusing. Does that mean you sized the necks and didn't bump the shoulder? How would you describe the procedure to adjust your die? The term neck tension is generally applied too often. Sometimes it means folks measure the force it takes to move an installed bullet, and sometimes it refers to the undersize comparison of the neck after size based on the bullet diameter. Your beginner target is about 0.002" of undersize in the neck when compared to the bullet. If you have much more than this, it can start to make bullet seating a challenge and it really doesn't aide accuracy. Also, if your case mouth is really at roughly 0.002" but you have a burr or sharp edge, you may see scraping anyway. You will need to get a tool that helps chamfer the mouth of the case to prevent sharp edges from scraping on the bullet jacket material. Any FL sizer can be run with or without the expander button or the decapping pin. For example, you adjust the stem of the expander ball just past the neck-to-shoulder transition with a little safety margin and no further. This expands the neck as the ball comes up, but means you probably don't need to pull the decapping pin. in any case, you can just pull the pin and leave the expander ball to do its normal job. I can't think of any reason you can't test your reloads if the only defect is that the bullet jacket got a little scrapped on the way in. If everything else is correct, that won't cause a safety problem all by itself. When you are at the range and have the gun pointed in a safe direction... close the bolt on a sample round, then extract it. Did the bolt close without extra force? Does the extracted round look normal? If not, then don't fire them but seek experienced help. Not being able to close the bolt, or finding damage could indicate a real safety issue. I can't even think of a FL die that doesn't come with a decap pin. All you need do is learn to adjust the stem. |

Why is your brass already primed if it is not sized?
Is it new? Did you deprime it with a universal decapping die, then prime, then try and size? Nine times out of nine shaving copper off the bullet is because one failed to chamfer in inside of the neck on New brass of trimmed brass. Did you chamfer the inside of the case mouth? |
| Sorry for the confusion, my depriming pin is attached to the internal neck sizing portion of the die so I can't pull KT back out. The brass is new primed lake city brass. I ran them through the sizing die about 90 percent in to avoid knocking out the primers. Il try those dies thanks. |
