has anybody built a bullet trap? I am looking at something for my back yard (4 acres). And diagrams would be nice. I would like to keep the lead out of the ground.

What I did was made a wooden sandbox.  Mine is small: 16"x13"x7 1/4".  For the front I use scrap 1x4 pine that I glue together.  It will last about 1,000 rnds if I keep patching the front with duct tape and cardboard.  When it gets pretty shot up, I sift through the sand with an old window screen.  It works pretty good, but sifting through the dry sand is really dirty.  I only do it on windy days so the really fine dust blows away from me.  I then replace the front and reuse the sand.

I would keep a sheet of 1/4" steel behind it facing down at an angle just in case you miss.

maybe try 1 inch steel plate.  It should last and you can scrap the bullets off when your done and use the lead.

Get a large rectangular "rubbermaid" type storage bin (30"longX18"wideX18"tall works great).  3-4 bags of rubber playground mulch (made from cut up tires).  Dump the rubber mulch  in the container and duct tape the lid on it.  Tape targets on the end.  Shot lengthwise it will stop .22, pistols and 308 subsonics.  Weatherproof (leave it in the rain).  Usually the bullets are just laying in the bottom of the bin, lasts for 1000s of rounds.
