Did anyone ever here about lanolin and alcohol mixed and sprayed on cases ? I read this on another forum so I tried it couldn't get it to separate, shook the crap out of it, heated it slightly still all it did was stick to the side of the bottle.so  maybe the person who wrote that was drinking the alcohol

I never did like that spray on crap...ALWAYS got too much on the cases..maybe because I'm old and old -fashioned.
All my pistol dies are carbide and my pistol brass is always polished before loading(no lube required) .....on my rifle cases I use (mostly) Imperial sizing die wax....the Hornady wax is good also.
              good luck!

How do you get the wax off of the cases?  You have to wipe every one?

Get some Dillon spray lube and never look back.  Avoid Hornady One Shot like the plague.

Back on the subject. I just tried this today. Turns out, anhydrous liquid lanolin won't go into solution with ethyl alcohol until 75 degrees C. At that point it is an exothermic reaction, causing a domino effect. It is sort of like what happens when you add water to strong acids instead of acids to water. I learned the hard way not to do this in a glass container. The domino effect shattered the glass container spilling $40 worth of chemical all over the place. It was a huge mess, good thing it was in the Chem lab and it was after hours so nobody else was there to see the embarrassment on my face. I've heard that it will go into solution with isopropyl alcohol at a lower temperature

You have to use 99% alcohol and LIQUID lanolin, mixes very easy. Use the 99% so it will evaporate fast,, lower % has water in it.
I've been using this mix for about two years now and I won't go back to store bought lube.
Easiest to use by putting the cases in a gal Zip-Loc bag (or any size), give a couple of squirts, turn bag over, and another, seal up baggie, and massage the cases for a couple of seconds, and size.
By the time you size the first case, it's dry, but lubed.

The anhydrous lanolin will go into solution a little easier if you use 95-99% alcohol.

Being an old time reloader and not being in a big hurry or doing large volume of rifle brass I like the Lee case lube and pad,I roll about ten cases at a time with a very light film of lube works wet or dry, size the cases and throw them back into the tumbler for about 30 min. and I'm ready to prime and load. I got about  five tubes couple years ago for $1.25 each, one thing I can say is I have never had a stuck case using it.

Yes, this isn't GD––please keep all posts businesslike and on-topic.

The vast majority of "I got a stuck case" threads involve Hornady One Shot.  The stuff does work if you are VERY scrupulous about following the directions.  Unfortunately this means using a great deal of the product, which is expensive.  The same money will get a bottle of Dillon that will do many thousands of rifle cases.

After reading many, many of these threads I can only recommend Dillon Lube (the only thing I use) or Imperial Wax (haven't used it but it has to be good, as those who do swear by it, and tend to be reloaders whom I know to be highly experienced).

I previously used Lee case lube and rolled them all on a RCBS pad,
but I finally bought a can of One Shot and I'm amazed at how well it
works!  I took my die apart as recommended and cleaned the old lube out.
I then coated inside with One Shot and let dry.  Placed 50 rnds in loading
block and shot with Once Shot.  It felt smoother in my press than the
Lee lube!  I am interested in this Lanolin mixture though!  Economy is key!

I did, I used lab grade 99% ethyl alcohol which didn't work. I will try some lab grade isopropyl though, hopefully that will work.

Thanks for all the input , I used the strongest alcohol they had , it was only 91% and the lanolin was in a tube ,I will try to find some 99% and see if that works , if not I guess it will be back to the Dillon or one shot , I am loading 223,  lots of them . Thanks again .

OK try.............

Brass Case Lube

Ted and I, being rather frugal, prefer something outside the realm of reloading, namely GB (Gardner Bender) Wire-Aide, Wire Pulling Lubricant, (Part # 79-006). GB is available at most home center or electrical supply stores. It’s the same creamy, wax-based product as offered by the reloading companies. BUT, an entire quart of GB is less than $5.00! ($3.60 at Fleet Farm in the Twin Cities) As I said, Ted and I are frugal.

Home made spray mix w/ RCBS Lube

I run (1) small 2oz white bottle of RCBS lube to 32oz of alcohol (91% alcohol)

16oz alcohol : 1oz RCBS case lube

___________________________________

sounds a bit like my mixture but I use 16 ounces of Isopropyl alcohol to 2 ounces of either RCBS pad lube (which is basically pure lanolin) or I use Pure lanolin from the drug store (if I can find it cheaper than the RCBS.

This is basically the same mix as Dillon pump lube, which I really like but is about 9 bucks a bottle. I can make twice as much for a fourth the cost.

Spray it on lightly and let the alcohol evaporate....leaving a really fine film of lanolin. I usually stand the casings up on a cardboard soda tray and when I'm done, I toss the tray.

BUT, as mentioned by a couple others.....for a few casings while I'm working up test loads (and also exclusively for the fifty BMG) there is absolutely nothing like Imperial!

Home made spray mix w/ LEE case lube

3-4 parts alcohol/1 part lube.

Use the 91% alcohol, the 70% contains too much H20.

If it's warm/hot outside, I place lubed cases on cookie sheet and let the sun hit them. If it's cool, I warm them in a low temp oven (150 deg). Cases get nice sheen of lube and alcohol evaporates.

I use anhydrous lanolin and 99% or better isopropyl alcohol. Heat the alocohol very carefully and drop in about 2 heaping tablespoons to a pint of alcohol and remove from the heat.

The lanolin will dissolve and when you ue the mix, you have to shake it for a second or 3.

I bought a case of pure lanolin and a case of 99 % alcohol and will never need to buy case lube again. You can order them by the bottle if you don't want that much.

Use 99% alcohol because the lanolin mixes better (<1% water). I use about 1.5 oz lanolin to 16 oz. alcohol. Shake well and spray a zip loc bag with 4 or 5 sprays for 50 to 75 cases. Way cheaper than Dillon which has the same ingredients.

Case Sizing Lubricants
Spray Lube
The spray-on case lubes are probably the best thing to happen to reloading in years. You can make your own spray case sizing lube in bulk by mixing liquid lanolin and 99% isopropyl alcohol. (While you can (kind of) use 91% isopropyl alcohol, its higher water content causes the lanolin to settle out and it must be shaken frequently during use. The more common 70% isopropyl "rubbing alcohol" will not work at all as its water content is much to high.)
Liquid lanolin, which is a refined lanolin oil with the solid fats removed (the reason why solid anhydrous lanolin doesn't work well in this application) is available from health food stores and sources specializing in ingredients for cosmetics. You want to get pure liquid lanolin without additives. Online sources include VitaGlo (http://www.vitaglo.com/7730.html) and Select Oils (http://www.selectoils.com/item––Lanolin-Liquid––SO-LanolinLiquid.html).
I just recently discovered that my local Safeway store carries 99 percent isopropyl in their drug/cosmetic isle for $0.99 for a 16 ounce bottle. Ninety-nine percent isopropyl alcohol is also available from many large paint stores (used for some finishes), some electronics stores (it's used for cleaning electronics) or local industrial chemical suppliers.
A solution of 1 part liquid lanolin and 4 to 5 parts parts 99 percent isopropyl alcohol (4 oz of liquid lanolin to16 - 20 oz of isopropyl) works well. When mixing you may find that the lanolin mixes better if you warm both the alcohol and lanolin in a bath of warm water to about 105 - 110 degrees F before mixing. DO NOT WARM EITHER OF THEM OVER AN OPEN FLAME! Once the solutions are warm, pour together, mix thoroughly, allow the mix to cool (mix occasionally as it cools) and store in an air tight container to prevent water from being absorbed by the isopropyl.
For a spray bottle you can use an old commercial spray lube bottle or an old pump hair spray bottle that has been thoroughly cleaned. To apply the lube, spread the cases in a single layer on a clean surface like an oven tray (those disposable aluminum oven liner trays are great and prevent the wrath of your chef when it is discovered that the cookie trays were used) and lightly and evenly spray the cases. Allow the cases to sit for a couple of minutes, roll the cases around and lightly spray again. Wait until the alcohol has evaporated (about 5 minutes) and start sizing. Properly lubed cases will have a slightly greasy feel to them without feeling slimy.
Another neat idea for spraying the cases is to put them in a plastic bag, spray, and then mix the cases, dump out on some newspaper, and let dry. Less messy than putting the cases on an oven tray and less likely to get you in trouble with the head chef.
Thanks to Steve Dzupin for this tip.
One of the advantages of using sprayed on lanolin as a case lube is that, in the quantities used, any residual lube has no effect on powder or primers.
Solid "Wipe On" Lubes
You can also use plain anhydrous lanolin straight from the can (but not as conveniently) for sizing by putting a little bit on your fingers (just lightly rub your fingers across the lanolin) and then rubbing the cases. "Mink Oil," a refined lanolin leather preservative also works well as a case lube.
Many large drug stores have bulk anhydrous lanolin or they will order it for you, or you can order in it 4, 8, or 16 ounce containers, from Majestic Mountain Sage, 881 West 700 North Ste 107, Logan, Utah 84321, Phone: 435-755-0863, or online at: http://www.thesage.com/catalog/FixedOil.html#Lanolin, and from Select Oils at http://www.selectoils.com/item––Lanolin––SO-Lanolin.html.
Many people have reported that they have used a little bit of STP oil treatment on their fingers or commercial water based silicone cable pulling lube as a sizing lube.
If you are still using pads to roll your cases on for resizing you can simply use regular undyed dishwashing liquid. Reports are that it works as well as some commercial liquid case lubes. Simply put a very small amount on your pad and rub it in with your fingers. Roll your cases across the pad and resize.
Thanks to Denis Allen for this soap tip.
