if you have the threading kit,you can DIY.  Won't look as nice as Moses work, but its all covered by the FH anyways.

The barrel threading kit is a pain in the ass.  The outside diameter of the barrel isgreater then the inside diameter of the barrel die.

You'll have to reduce the outside diameter of the barrel before you can use the die.  I've done two barrels and it was a PITA using hand tools.

The third one I sent to Moses.  Outstanding job.

Biggest problem with DIY is cleaning up the crown. If the barrel is cut just a tad off the gun will throw shots. If the crown isn't properly deburred and true the gun will not be accurate. Send it to Moses, he did one for me a few years ago and did a wonderful job for reasonable money.

I had Moses cut my and re-thread my FAL barrel. His work is top quality and reasonably priced. Contact him and and ask him the length he reccomends first. I had mine cut to 16 inches without talking with him . Would not cut it that short again. You will have some sight issues after shortening the barrel. Most rifles shot low after cutting.  I had to replace my rear sight with an Israli rear  to get it to zero.

Has anyone figured out why they do this?

Yes, it is called recoil.

Bullet exits the bbl sooner.  Folks will tell you it is velocity loss, but there really isn't that much loss.

I got my FAL cut down to 16" at the West Coast Armory in WA. They did a good job but didn't believe me that the gas port needed to be widened. Needless to say 2-3 range trips and 2 drill bits later it runs perfectly.
