You can probably install a MX9644 ( US ) tube, and simplify the electronics substantially, but if you're collecting, then you may not want to make drastic changes to it.

I figure externally if it stays the same I'm OK with it. Ideally, any modifications I make should be completely reversible so if I turn around some day and sell it, I can sell it with all its original parts.

From what I've read, the reticle is powered by an LED that is external to the tube. That's all I know at the moment.

Would such a tube just wire in like the old one? I notice that they both have 4 terminals, I wonder if the Russians just copied an American one.

The tube is different from the russian one - The russian one requires an external oscillator while the US ones just take 3v and have adjustable gain on the remaining two pins.
