Weather was forgiving here in Ohio so I went on a nice 4 hour range sesh today.
At the range, a fellow shooter brought a chrono. I've been dying to know what my AUG outputs. He gladly let me use it to check how my 18 inch Steyr AUG performs. The cartridge I used was Wolf Gold 223 55gr (The advertised velocity is 3250 FPS on Sportsmans guide). I'm assuming it can theoretically be achieved with a 50 inch bolt action rifle. Results: In normal setting (semi auto), the velocity ranged from 3120-3130. In grenade setting so called the bolt action setting, the velocity ranged from 3150-3160. I did not take down the average but from repetitions bullet gains about 30 FPS in bolt action mode. Anecdotally, the bolt action setting could potentially gain 30+ or even 50, just my feelings though. I could try again sometime. If you were wondering the same thing, this is my result. Note, my AUG has an 18 inch barrel. |
