I have an 870 wingmaster with a barrel in shootable but otherwise grungy shape.  It has already been cut down (by previous owner) to 19" or so.
I am putting a new stock on the gun and it interferes with the vent rib (it's a long story).

Anyway my real question is, can I cut out sections of the vent rib?  The parts that are not attached to the barrel seem to be a no-brainer, just cut them away.  What about the parts that are attached to the barrel; are they just held on with glue?  Can I just grnnd them down?

The posts are soldered onto the barrel. You can cut them close with a hacksaw then file/grind off the remaining part of the post. Obviously the resulting spots on the barrel will be without any bluing so you can re-blue, paint, or otherwise alter the appearance to suit yourself

How in the world could the stock interfere with the rib?

Actually, the rib pillars are brazed on the barrel.

While it's "possible" to heat each pillar with a good torch until the high-temp braze melts, the best of a bad situation is to cut them off.
While a red heat may not be bad for the barrel, it AIN'T good for it either.
Plus, you'd be spot heating the barrel down the entire length, which would also ruin ALL the finish.

I'm interested in knowing this too.
