| Okay, so I ordered that thing to take off the handguards(AR15) and I ordered the barrel wrench. Now I want to trade out the barrels of a 20" flattop upper with a 16" A2 upper. Do I need to worry about torque? |

Here's a storm in the making. Lots of arguing on this topic but... I don't worry about torque when installing an AR15 barrel. Since installing the barrel on an AR15 doesn't set headspace the only thing your doing is hanging a barrel. And with the gas tube in place even if the barrel nut were to loosen it wouldn't move very much so the rifle still wouldn't be unsafe to shoot. When installing the barrel nut I tighten the nut and loosen it 3 times and on the third time I move it forward enough to align clearence for the gas tube. I have yet to have a barrel nut loosen up on any of the rifles on which I've installed a barrel. I'm not saying anyone else should do it this way but it has worked for me. |
| There's only 1 or two slots in the nut for the gas tube to go through, so a torque wrench is pointless. Usually the first slot is a bit tighter than hand tight, I think around 30ft lbs, and the notch after that is even tighter. It can take up to 80ft lbs to get it to the 2nd one. Use moly grease on the threads, and you're good to go. Just don't over geekify, or over complicate things. |
