I don't have a dog or cat to test this out, and it's too damn cold to walk the woods at night right now.
Using NV and a IR weapons light can you see animal eye shine?

Someone asked me the other day and I thought it was a good question. Thanks.

Yes, very much so.  The brighter and more focused the beam, the greater the eye shine.

Absolutely,  check out any trail cam type device that has an IR night camera.  The effect is about the same with an IR and an NVD.  Lee

Definitely. The better adapted to dark, the shinier they are :)

Snakes have relatively poor eyesight and their night vision isn't great either, so they won't glow nearly as much as a deer or cat.
They do most of their hunting with their pits.

But a wolf spider's eyes will glow.  My backyard looks like the clear night sky

Pigs' eyes don't eye shine as much as deers' or cows' do.

CTM1, that is exactly what I did with this coyote.

Shot him right between the eyes with the laser, my friend sez, "Aw, too bad you missed him, he disappeared instantly!"

I said no way, the civilian legal 0.7mW laser was right between his two bright red glowing eyes when I pulled the trigger.....haha.

Eyeshine no more...

Yeah, snakes will match their surroundings on a thermal, unless they just recently moved from a different area, such as from a warm rock to the cool ground.

Encounters with rattlesnakes are very common throughout the counties where I do the majority of my NV pig hunting and a pair of snake boots is always something I recommend to my hunters.  My educational background is snakes so I am very comfortable interacting with them once I have made contact, but spotting them with NV when you're focused on locating pigs is difficult and often times you'll pass right by them without even knowing.  If your lucky they will politely let you know they are there before you get too close.  Thermal doesn't help either for the most part.  I do hunt one ranch that has a dark asphalt road and the snakes like to use it to raise their body temps before hunting for the night.  This makes them a bit easier to spot with thermal once they've left the road if they are moving, but if they are coiled up off the road they just look like the hundreds of rocks that also retain heat into the night.

Haha, wolf spiders are the good guys, as long as they're outside.  They eat other spiders, like black widows and brown recluses.

Same thing with your friendly neighborhood phidippus...

Yeah, no thank you.  I often get made fun of in the herp community when it comes to me and gators.  I can tolerate them on land but I will not get into any water where I might run across one.  I have the same fear in the ocean if I can't see what's beneath me
