The ammunition manufacturers publish tables with the performance produced by their products.

Look up the ammunition you want to duplicate, then find a handload that matches the performance.  Simple.

Part of the idea and advantage of handloading is the capability of producing ammunition that is better than factory ammo.  Sometimes that is hard, sometimes it's easy.

Look in the back section of your copy of CoW.  It has the actual mil spec loading data as well as "duplicates factory load" information in the specific cart section.

"Cartridges of the World."  It's a good reference to have, along with "The ABC's of Reloading."

I know winchester use to do this and publish the data. As far as other 's I don't know. Many use a powder brand known as Unobtainable which I have been unable to obtain.

Most folks want to dupe GI Ammo......."Commercial Factory Ammo" not so much.

Anyway............

Military Loads w/ Commercial Powder

www.frfrogspad.com/miscellq.htm#duplicate

Aloha, Mark

PS.............and before anyone goes there............I'm talking about "close enough."

I know that an EXACT DUPLICATE (of a military or commercial round)............maybe/somethimes very hard (if not impossible to do) with what the "Average Joe" has to work with.

BTW.........Winchester (like most powder companies) use to give away free data for their powders.

Try checking at your local store or check their web site.  Or, contact them for a copy.

Aloha, Mark

PS............try clinking the links found here........

OMG............this is NOT good.

I just went to the Winchester web site to check on the free data download.........clicked the link for data.........

http://www.wwpowder.com/

Guess what?

After a 15.09 MB download..............I get "Hodgdon Data."

Jeez..........OK, they got bought and all that...........but, this is F&^@#d up.

Aloha, Mark

Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester powders are all MARKETED by Hodgdon.  You WILL find load data for Winchester canister grade powders in that enormous download.

thanks everyone.
i have a new trp and i'm too cheap to buy wwb ammo to break it in with(not that i could find any at any price!)
most of my loads are hotter than what i want to break in a new pistol with.

I looked again............

Half of the down load is SG loads.

Anyway, YES, there was some smattering of WW powders used.  Not as much as before (like when WW was "independent").

As, an example............loads for WW 748 in .223 Rem. (page 15).   The download listed with only 3 bullet weights (50, 53, and 55 gr.) for WW 748 powder.

Then.............as for the "other powders MARKETED by Hodgdon."   Again talking about .223 Rem...........there are loads for 40, 50 and 55 gr..............that's all folks.

IMHO...............a VERY POOR JOB OF MARKETING.

Things are going "DOWNHILL".................definitely NOT an "IMPROVEMENT."  Besides, the scan is all crooked.

Aloha, Mark

PS...........YES, GHPorter you are correct.............

It wasn't an outright sale of the Winchester Company's (powder component) line as in my previous post.

From the WW web site............

Powder Information

Winchester Powder is now supplied by Hodgdon.

For information see the Winchester Smokeless Propellants web site developed by Hodgdon.

Hodgdon

*The red in the original was for linking.  The blue is mine.

"Supplied".........does that mean "make/produced/manufactured by?"

Because, IIRC it was a "Marketing and/or Distribution" agreement.  Anyway.............IF this is Hodgdon's idea of a PLAN.............IMHO, WW needs to re-think their decision.

OK......I was angry with the situation and called Hodgdon's Sales.

They said that WW Powder was made in FL by a "company."

The powder is then marketed and distributed by Hodgdon through their network.

And YES, I did tell them about what I thought of their web site data.

As GHP mentioned, "Cartridges of the World".  One heck of a good reference, especially for obsolete/obscure cartridges and duplicating mil/factory loads.  The question you asked is directly covered in the back section.

Okay, let's narrow that down to gunpowder manufacturer's in Florida - St. Marks!

Thanks!  I couldn't remember the name.  They make a LOT of powders for a lot of different vendors, not the least of which are (of course) IMR, Hodgdon, and Winchester.  Winchester corporate decided to focus on their ammunition lines and sold off the DISTRIBUTION rights to Hodgdon, which has shown a lot of smarts in this area, having bought but not absorbed IMR a few years ago.  It's all good, really.
