I just received my trust today and plan to stop by a LGS friday to buy a new lower.

My question stems from wanting to assemble my own upper and not buy what the shop has in stock. I plan to go with a 11.5 barrel. So when can I actually buy the barrel? Must I purchase it from them and they hold it until I hear back on the stamp (like buying a complete SBR upper)? Or do I purchase it after I hear back on the stamp?

Thanks!

The correct answer is you buy it and give it to someone you know to hold until you get your approval.........or, you build your new lower as a pistol and you use the 11.5 inch barrel, then you put a stock on it after you get your approval........or, you wait until you have your approval to buy a short barrel.  Those are some of the "correct" answers.
I think most will just build the lower as a pistol. I thnk you have to have the LGS paper the lower as a pistol. You can switch from a built pistol to a rifle, but not vice versa. (unless it was first built as a pistol)

Buy the barrel, build the entire upper even, just don't assemble it on any lower unless it's configured as a pistol. Might as well buy two lowers and SBR one and build a pistol out of the other so you can test/shoot the future SBR upper while waiting for your stamp.

I agree with the first part that is what I did. Nothing wrong with having the barrel or a full upper as long as you don't put it on the lower till it is approved.

But why would he need two lowers? Buy a lower assemble as a pistol build then when stamp is approved switch out the pistol tube for a rifle tube and put your stock on and you are set.
