Assuming you want to buy new, semi autos and doubles are mostly out of your price range. I'd look at the Rem 870 Express in 12ga with a 26" or 28" vent rib barrel. This should cost less than $300, leaving you enough $$$ to buy an extra short barrel for home defence too.

A pump also will not run afoul of any crazy Yankee "assault weapons" laws .

IMO, the Remington 870 is the most versatile shotgun on the market.
It can easily (and more importantly inexpensively) be configured for any task you need it for.

Some people like the Mossberg... I always found them to be inferior in quality and design to the Remington, but to a large extent its Ford vs Chevy.

Actually, I would rate the Mossberg over the 870 Express, especially for someone on a budget.  Remington accessory barrels cost nearly twice as much as the equivalent Mossberg barrel.  Other advantages of the Mossberg:
-Ambidextrous tang safety
-No J-lock
-Better slide release position
-Extra round of standard capacity
-Smoother action than the average late model 870

If you were willing to consider used guns, keep an eye out for an older 870 Wingmaster.  I see them fairly frequently for $150-200 and they are a hell of a lot more gun than either the 870 Express or the Mossberg 500.  Great fit and finish, smooth action, and all steel parts.

One of the advantages of the 870 is its durability.  The gunsmiths I know consider it to be the best (most dependable) shotgun on the market.  This isn't meant as a slam on the 500.

I have 2 870s and two Benellis, a Nova and a SuperNova. The 870 is great and easy to mod, but I think the Benelli is a better gun out of the box. The safety and slide release are much easier to use on Benelli, and it has a mag cutoff that makes unloading after an unsuccessful hunt easier .
