| for survival reasons, is it possible to us an AR15 to get fish... No joke........ more of would it stun the fish if close enought to the top of the water and then catch it..... not expecting 100 meters, just a few feet !!!!!!! or just a waste of good ammo..... |

Quoted: Buy blanks, stick muzzle in the water and prepare to get wet.. My dad claimed when he was in the Army guys who were on guard duty had m1 carbines with blanks before they went overseas and that they would fire sharpened sticks out of the barrels at wild hogs. |

Every pic I've ever seen of my Pop when he was in the Army he was holding a stein of German beer. |
| From my experience if the fish were ta 6 inches or less under the water you could probably kill them. Deeper not, it wouldn't even stun them. TNT always works good though. The water slows a bullet down very quickly, I would make sure you are using a FMJ. Any type of HP round will expand as soon as it hits the water. I have never shot .223 in the water, but as a kid I shot a 22LR in the water a few times, you get almost no penetration into the water. Also be careful because at the wrong angle the bullet will skip across the water. |

looks like you'd have better luck with a pistol than a rifle. (that whole non-Newtonian fluids thing)
FROM MYTHBUSTERS Hiding underwater can stop bullets from hitting you. partly confirmed All supersonic bullets (up to .50-caliber) disintegrated in less than 3 feet (90 cm) of water, but slower velocity bullets, like pistol rounds, need up to 8 feet (2.4 metres) of water to slow to non-lethal speeds. Shotgun slugs require even more depth (the exact depth couldn’t be determined because their one test broke the rig). However, as most water-bound shots are fired from an angle, less actual depth is needed to create the necessary separation. |

In a survival situation, I'd prefer to save bullets for more dangerous critters. I may have to protect myself from someone else who wants my fish :)
I've killed minnows with a .22 before, so I guess it would work, but I probably wouldn't want the extra noise reflecting off the water drawing attention to me. |

Some of our guys got a porcupine with a section of cleaning rod out of an M16A2 with blanks. |

That is bizarre, but really cool. |

Anyone who has spent any time in the Infantry I think has done this. :) You can usually get them to puncture an MRE cover (the cardboard sleeve) but not kill an animal at any realistic range.. |

We were posted up on the dock and could hear the misses zing off into the woods. |

1982. Catfish hunting with an air rifle. Shot one and the wife dutifully waded out to collect dinner. Then the fish started trying to attack her. Out came the Remington 870, and I told her to back away from the killer Catfish monster. Kablam, one dead as hell fish. Took it to the father-in-law and he explained we had killed a large Carp, and only "people of color" ate them...went to Long John's for dinner.

Mythbusters did the bullet penetration in water test.

I have shot many fish with a .22lr both pistol and rifle.
A shot from straight above such as off a bridge or a rocky overlook down upon a fish within a 6" from the surface works great. Or stand upstream from them so as they swim against the current you can get the body in a straight line towards you and aim for there heads. |
| In my area it is far easier to go fingering for trout,,,,sorta like noodling for cats but the fish are alot smaller, LOL in fact in the summer it is the only way to catch them, they wont bite/hit any lure or bait during daylight hours. I dont think a 223 wil produce enough shockwave to have much effective range for concussive fishing, best to empty a few of those rounds and make your own cherry bomb. |

Maybe, I have read that a .22 pellet glued on top of a blank cartridge will work for squirrels out of an M16. never actually fired an M1 carbine |

so not only can we use an AR 15 for fishing .. I can use blanks and arrows for bow seasons,,,,, I hope you are joking....
If you are concerned about this get a magpul grip or some other grip with storage and tuck line and hooks up in the grip. The AR is a great survival rifle, that doesnt mean you freakin use it to fish
