hey guys,

bought a fm colt style 9mm bolt a while back. just got a chance to use.
running it w/ a s.s. it quit running after about 30rds. took the halves apart
& removed the bolt and found that the head of the firing pin broke off where
it meets the stem. was this just a defective pin or something else?

thanks for any ideas.

Just a bad pin.
9mm PCCs are hard on things. They beat themselves up pretty bad.
Order a good replacement, CMMG or Colt. Order two while you're at it. Cheap insurance

My girlfriend ran a Foxtrot Mike 9mm upper in USPSA competition for several years and broke a dozen firing pins, including S7 tool steel and titanium ones that were all labeled as unbreakable.  There is something off about the bolt carrier.

they break a lot in PCC.  Wilson combat sells a billet one made from tool steel. that is what you want

Contact FTM.
They will make it right.

I had an issue with my completed AR9 lower and the trigger control group.
It would not reset after each round, not without me sticking my finger behind the trigger and pushing forward. I didn't matter what ammo (brand, weight, Super or Sub, suppressed or not) or what mags I used.
I tried cleaning and lubing it really well, removing and reinstalling, etc... No love.

I called or emailed them can't remember, they sent me new parts out the same day with return postage paid for the old.
Then followed up with me twice making sure I was satisfied after I had reinstalled and tested it.
I've not had another issue in the 2 years since....

looked at CMMG site for pin & spring.
when clicking the link for either...both come back as "page not found".  looked a little more
for them and still could not find pin and spring.

the Wilson Combat ( from their site) pin seems very nice but they want $16 to ship. seems like a bit much
for an item that could be sent in a very small envelope.

looked else where for wilson`s pin and all sold out, same with cmmg. Colt`s are all sold out from other sites too.

saw some from RTB`s but not sure if they are well made.

if anyone knows of any other place to buy a well made pin & spring, please reply.

thnx!

hey guys,
just did a little research for the pin and spring.

the Foxtrot Mike`s 9mm pin spring is smaller in dia. than a mil spec spring.
i had another 9mm bolt from cmmg and took the pin and spring out.

tried to install the pin and spring in the FM bolt. the spring was too big in dia. to go into the bolt.
and i also could tell that the FM spring was very thin, weak & flimsy. not nice and strong
as in the cmmg spring.

i measured the dia. of the FM spring, its 3/16...the cmmg spring was 7/32.

where the heck am i going to find another spring of this dia. and length so it works with the
FM bolt?

sure as heck dont want to put in another flimsy FM spring even if they do send me another pin and spring.

Check out this article on blowback9.com:

He found a stronger spring in a Harbor Freight spring kit.

A final solution that he liked better was a $5 spring set from Amazon:

I bought my FM9 four years ago and never had an issue with the firing pin breaking.
I had one become extremely corroded and FM sent me a new one.

read both those links...good stuff! FM contacted me this morning. sending me another spring & pin.
looks like my only option is to buy the wilson combat pin and spring since there spring is the same o.d.
size as the FM according to those links i read. just a shame i`ll have to spend $16 just to ship a couple of
oz.`s of metal.

i might just purchase the springs from amazon to keep as spares. but i at least think the wilson pin
will be stronger than the FM pin.

question for some of you guys who shoot ar 9mm:

since my FM firing pin broke only after appx 40 rds of s.s. use,
would the weak, ball point pen like firing pin spring FM uses be the cause
of the pin breaking? wondering if a stiffer compression spring would help
or is it just "one of those things" shooting the 9mm?

if the spring might have been the culprit...

just received my replacement pin & spring from FM. just wondering if i should
use it or find a stronger spring first before chancing another broken pin?

thanks!

As the firing pin broke with an exceedingly low usage, I suspect the firing pin was not properly heat treated.  Not common, but it does happen.
MHO, YMMV, etc.

I have a FM-9 complete pistol.
I’ve got close to 500 rounds through it trying to get a S.S. to work.
I could never get more than a couple of 3-5 round rapid strings before I ended up with a dead gun and the hammer against the firing pin.

Gave up on getting it to be super and safe.
The gun runs great in standard configuration and the firing pin is still going.

Sounds like you just got a defective firing pin.
