| I'm thinking about getting a bigger one. Does anyone have one with a electric lock? Are they as secure as the regular combination lock? I'm thinking about a "redhead" from Basspro shops. What do you guys think? |

Do lots a research before buying a safe! Most guns safes are not what they seem. Most are not "safes" but "RSC's" (Residential security cantainers). There is a big difference in the UL listing. There is great info here on gun safes: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunsafes.html After doing months of research I went with Sturdy Safe: http://www.sturdysafe.com/fireproof.htm |

I considered going w/ a mechanical lock, but the shop strongly recommended the electronic unit for its ease of use & reliability (There was no price difference between both lock types, so no "sales-pitch" going on). They also told me they've only sold the ultra-large safe models w/ electronic locks; everyone opts for them. Apocolyptic nuke-generated magnetic pulses aside, the mechanical lock isn't any more reliable than the electronic (If that should happen, you have siginificantly bigger problems). In fact, the mechanical tumblers can themselves be a source of potential trouble. The electronic lock runs on a single 9-V battery for ~3-4 yrs. It beeps an audible tone repeatedly when it gets low & can be replaced w/o opening the door. Probably the nicest feature is the ability to re-program the combination &/or program in unique multiple combinations. I've had mine for a year now. Besides, if John Matrix trusts an electronic lock, why shouldn't you? |
