i posted before how i had bent the decapper rod on a brand new set of dies decapping ik brass i received good advice on the lee universal decapping die and purchased one. it came in today and i threw in a random hand full of the ik brass,8 of10 primers popped out with minimal force but felt like the pin was swageing the flash hole. the other two required to much pressure so i did not decapp them. my dilemma is that i have about 2000 rounds of ik brass, new in stripper clips so i need to use them for reloading so could i drill out the flash hole to make them larger and how can i decapp the stubborn ones that the lee die want do i took some pics but i am having trouble downloading them http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=ofu5ok&s=5 |
| Any chance you could chuck up one of the decapping pins in a drill and use some emory cloth or something to reduce the diameter of it a bit? Seems to me that you'll have to get the cases decapped somehow, and then enlarge or uniform the flash holes...and since it'd be pretty tough to enlarge the holes before you decap them, you're left with using a smaller diameter pin to do the decapping and THEN enlarging the holes. |

You could, but I think you'd run into a couple problems. First, it'd be a pain in the ass to try to get the bit into the flash hole from inside the case. You'd need one long, skinny bit to do that, and I can't see how you'd manage to reliably get it into the flash hole without it bouncing around inside the case. Second, I can see you running into a problem of accidentally drilling too far, and drilling through the old primer, making it that much harder to eventually decap it.
My .02 is to get the primers out first, and then either reload them once and scrap them (probably not what you want) or hit the flash holes with a drill or a uniforming tool after you decap them. |

Wouldn't expanding the flash hole change the profile of the pressure generated? Just a thought..
I had a 100 or so rounds (Hansen Cartridge Co.) . After some frustration and research I just said screw it and gave the once fired brass away. You however have an investment. Good luck |

You are half way there with the Lee decapping die.
The other half is lube. I put a little Imperial sizing wax in my finger and lube the decapping pin every 2 to 3 cases when decapping 1k brass the first time. Yes you are swaging the flashole. Like removing the primer crimp, only has to be done once. The lube keeps the decapping pin from pulling out of the decapping stem. If you don't have some Imperial, use whatever you are using for sizing lube. Here is the Picture posting Tutorial. Good luck. |

Sinclair sells a flash hole reamer, intended to punch undersize flash holes out to .081"; however, it shows a sout of stock, with no back orders right now.
