I have an 870 express that I keep loaded in the closet but no shell in the chamber. I have the 7+1 magazine. Will the spring 'set' over time? It usually just sits and sits (I live in a safe area). I have an extra Wolf spring in case I need to replace the stock spring at some future date. Anyway, do you think it is hard on the magazine spring to just keep it fully loaded? Thanks, Falafull |

Springs don't go bad from being loaded, they go bad from cycling. In other words, if you constantly load and unload a magazine, the constant stressing and un-stressing the spring causes it to "wear out". Leaving a spring loaded long term does no damage. The REAL danger of leaving a shotgun loaded long term is shot shell compression. The constant spring pressure causes the shells to actually compress, and develop bulges in the shell between the shell head and the area where the shot is. These bulges can cause stoppages. The "Fix" for that is: Check the loads every month or so. At the first sign of bulging, shoot them up and reload with fresh shells. Buy higher grade American shells. They seem to be made of a better grade of plastic and don't bulge as easily. |
