So I went to the range today with my 2 month old m1a andhad a few issues.first I could not get it to zero on irons at 100 yds.I had just some stock 147 g cbc ammo ammo.then suddenly I had a slam fire!..it took me a second to realize what had happened.im not real impressed with this gun...should I sendIt back to springfield?

Nothing wrong happened with the slam fire. You were feathering the trigger, it fired  and the recoil caused you to fire it again. It's a not uncommon issue with them. When you pull the trigger, make sure you hold it back in the follow through and then release your finger and let it reset.

Done it myself with my Garands when I was new to them and the M1A is the same trigger/hammer system.

wow...in thinking back about the incident..you could be right!do these guns require match grade ammo to shoot at least descent?the gun is a nm version.

My M9106 Standard grade shoots 1-2 MOA groups at 100 yds with Aussie surplus. At 25 yd zeroing, a 10 rd group could be covered with a quarter from loop sling prone.

Since it isn't a .22 rimfire, a workable distance would be 200 yd.

Hank:

I was trained with M14 30+ years ago (and M1 Garand).  I still shoot my CMP Garand.

You can start with 25 yards.  make sure POI and POA are adjusted together.  Then you can go out to 100 yards or longer distance, depending on what you usually do.  Starting with 25 yards is a lot easier.  If you start at 100 yards with a new rifle, you may not even hit the target paper!

a 25 yards zeroing with iron sight, as I recall, will give you the zeroing at 200 yards also (with some adjustment for sure).  Then you can use this zeroing in combat through 300 yards or so without adjustment of the sight.

What did you mean you could not get it zeroed?

Do you mean the rear sight was all the way down and it was still shooting high?

What were the sight settings in windage and elevation?

These rifles do not require "match" ammo.

MATCH AMMO CAN BE 1 MOA, NON MATCH BALL 4 MOA AND IM HAPPY.

Were you shooting high, low, or what?

the elevation setting on the rear sight should not be all the way back.  From the lowest setting, you need to crank up several clicks for a typical 100 or 200 yards zeroing.  That's why starting at 25 yards getting the POI quickly to the POA on paper can be done quickly, then do the 100, 200 or 300yards zeroing.

Ya, do you shoot high or low with the rear sight all the way back?

In the Army we sighted our M14's in at 25 meters (the 1000 inch range).  We used this target called a Canadian Half Bull.

Correct front/rear sight alignment is required, then front sight alignment on the target so that the top of the front sight lines up with the bottom of the white square (bottom center of the black rectangle) to you see a nice white square.  Fire and adjust the rear sight as needed to move the group to the top X (above the black rectangle).  Then it should be good to go out to 250 meters on a man sized target.

You should still shoot it at different ranges in order to see where the bullets strike.

As a side note, we were never told to adjust the rear sight (by loosening the elevation screw and working with the elevation knob and re-tightening the screw) so that the elevation makrs/numbers actually could be used to adjust the rear sight for varying ranges.  It seems a shame (now that I think about it) that we had a rifle that had such great sights and we were not taught how to use them or practiced to use them.  Rifle marksmanship, even for us 11B guys wasn't a priority in those days.

Please explain what "all the way back" means. I can understand "all the way up" or "all the way down" for an elevation setting, but I am not understanding this term.

Out of the box stock rifle a AR is normally more accurate, and cheaper to get to shoot tighter groups.

SAI  has a taller front sight to fix this. Call them to get it.
