ive done some research on this but cant find anything.

m44 just picked it up yesterday, bolt action worked fine.  took it apart, cleaned and reassembled.  now the upward motion
of the bolt (to set the firing pin) is near impossiable.  once the pin is set, the back and forth motion is relatively smooth.  The
firing pin can be set with the "nub" on the rear of the bolt with no problem.  any ideas.

I assume you have seen the link below, but my suggestion would be to go back and disassemble the bolt again and double check that nothing went wrong during the previous re-assembly.  

Is the firing pin in the same postion in the cocking piece as it was before?  

Mosin bolts are not the smoothest operating bolts anyway, but cleaning should not have changed anything.

They cock on opening. You need to lube ( with grease ) the bolt esp the cam surface between the cocking piece and bolt body.
