Morning gents, been working on a rifle for a little over a year now, got it "done" 4 months ago and have been doing some T&E on how well it works. Small ring mauser, 7.62x39 barrel, feeding from mini-30 magazines, The problem i have is i fit the OE extractor by grinding the area around the claw to make it sit a bit farther toward the center of the bolt face. Well the extractor broke about halfway down the long axis. I tried one of the blank extractors, got it fitted to the gun but found that is is to narrow across the face and it allows it to turn and upset the grip it has on the case.
My next thought is to some how extend the extractor claw on a surplus extractor, I know they are springs, and heating can upset the temper. Was thinking of freezing the extractor in a cup of water and leaving just the face exposed and tig welding on a bit of metal. However i dont know what kind of filler metal to use, Or would brazing on an extension bee a better bet? I am going to switch out the mini30 mags for single stack ak mags in the near future b/c feeding is not up to 100% reliability. Thanks for any help you can offer |

I get what you are doing. I have a couple mauser based conversions.
I would try to TIG weld it, first. I would think 70S (or sorts), 303 might even work fine. the standard 60 & 70 series might be to thin and crack if you dont get full penetration. I dont think you need to, or want to, freeze half of it. If left to cool evenly, it should be fine and even bend by hand if need be. The part doesnt see much stress so I think youll be ok. They go for cheap on ebay so give it a shot and get a new one if it doesnt work. |

Okay, so I'm stupid....... Are you trying to get a action to feed and extract a case that it wasn't designed for? yes, originally the rifle was 7mm mauser, now it shoots 7.62x39 pictures The case head is a bit smaller than the 7mm, so the extractor needs to be extended |
