I was shooting my bolt action Savage 17 hmr at the range today and noticed that 1 out of every 4 rounds that I shot had a split in the shell casing around the neck. I was shooting Remington Premier .17 HMR Magnum ammo, and shot about 150 rounds, and about 40 had splits in them. So would this be bad ammo, or what?

excessive headspace?

Shoot a different brand of ammo and check for splits.

I had the same thing happen while using both Federal and Remington .17hmr ammo. It seems to be a fairly common thing with this caliber; my guess is that the brass is weakened when the cases are formed.

My rifle was a CZ 452, btw.

I have fired 700-800 rounds of various 17HMR in 3 different Savage rifles and have never split a case. Now, I admit, it's been about a year since I sold my last Savage 17HMR. Has ammo quality gone away in the last year? Is this something new, or have others been splitting cases all along?

Have shot couple of hundred rounds thu my H&R sporster, but never saw any split cases with Hornaday. I do notice that they won't fit back in the trays easily so there seems to be a fair amount of expansion occuring.

i have had a couple of split cases out of my 917v. if you look at the shoulder of the fired case you can see it changes shape after it is fired, loses it sharp edges and rounds out a bit. from your pics it looks like yours do the same. i think its just a combination of a sloppy chamber and weak brass.
