Those are West German guns. East Germans reworked old WWII vintage P-38's. If you pick one up try to get one with a reinforcement lug in the frame. Get them now while they are cheap!

I got one of them (it is actually a Walther P1, aluminum frame dated 1964 I think).
The ergonomics are fantastic, the sights are large and excellent.
I HIGHLY recommend one, especially for the low prices I see them selling for.

Here is a pic of the one I got. Look for the 6 sided lug just forward of the trigger.

It's not really a " Reinforcement " lug. It is a steel hex pin inserted in frame to provide a steel wear surface for the locking block cam. Has 0 to do with recoil or making frame stronger...

With the P1 you get a stronger slide and better sights but you get a lined bbl that tend to go bad ( liner walking out ) and the hex pin that makes frame more prone to cracking.

Both the P1 and P38 are good guns and will last as long as you don't abuse them with a diet of +P / Subgun ammo or Nato Ball.
