My dad was going through some of his father's stuff today and found this.  All I can tell it's a Colt .22 of some sort.  Anything you can tell me about it would be greatly appreciated.

It's a colt woodsman that appears to have be eaten by a dog or maybe a really big rat

Yep, Colt Woodsman. Looks like the grips went through a fire and melted. The way the finish at the  magwell looks just makes me think confirms it for me. Looks like the holster protected the rest.

ETA:

Also looks like someone did some "work" on the trigger.

Quite possibly the most fun to shoot .22 pistol ever made.

Looks like an outstanding restoration (NOT refinishing) project, if professionally done, so as to not diminish value. Nice find! Wonder what the backstory on that gun is.

Thanks guys.  I'm trying to convince him to send it my way for restoration or whatever.  He has no interest in guns.  If I can find out any more about it, I'll let you know.

1953 Second Series Colt Woodsman.  And a beaver.

As mentioned it's a Woodsman. The grips on those were an early plastic and often warped or fell apart from age or fairly low heat. Looks like it may have just been left in a hot car or stored near a stove/fireplace. Brownells used to carry reproduction grips for them and may still.

Thanks for the links.  I'll be picking this up in a few weeks and see first hand how bad it is.   Hopefully I can get her restored to her former glory
