I have done quite a few scopes now with duracoat and cant quite seem to get it to hold on perfect. I usually begin with sanding with 220 grit paper and then cleaning good with acetone before spraying. I really have trouble when using templates. When removing them, sometimes the paint lifts off with the template. Any ideas? I called Lauer and they said to degrease, sand with 400 grit and leave the sanding dust on it and spray it. They said the dust gives it more bite....sounds like it would be worse to me. |

I use a Scoth-Brite pad to rough up the scope. Be sure it is de-greased really well. Do not remove the template too early. You may try spraying one color each day and let dry over night. I use an oven set at 100 degrees between each color for an hour between colors then I let the scope cool and sit over night before I pull the templates. If the Duracoat has not had some cure time the color will peel. It will also peel if you spray too much color to thick. I have never left the dust on the scope or even heard of that. |

Their directions says to leave the dust on it if you read it. As to my expierence. I don't use heat one templetes have been applied. What I found out was the heat caused the adhiesive to bond to the coating and pull it off. I would just let it sit for 1 day Min to allow it to fully dry before removing them. |

I stopped having those problems when I started using bulldogs templates. I also found my box with heat lamps in the storage room. Now after my base coat is done I set the parts over the lamp for the afternoon. I also leave the sanding dust and blast dust on the surface. Every new piece is a learning process, I hate trial and error. |

I always let it set to cure for 1 day between templates. I think my problem may be putting the base coat on too thick...I am bad about that. I think I may try the scotch brite pads this time and see how that works. Are you using the green ones? It seems to me that scope manuf's leave the surface really smooth when they coat them...that doesnt help either. Anyone know if that is anodizing or is it something else? |
