hello,
i have a quick question.  i was browsing a local gun shop and saw a g3 on the shelf.  the finish was ok on it.  it was built on a fac reciever i believe.  it has the nice black furnature.  can anyone tell me what would be an average price for a rifle of this type. i already have a fal, an ak and an ar15 and wouldn't mind expanding the collection if its a decent deal. thanks
sean

$250-$400...I am no expert. That is what the Century ones are going for anyway.

Prices have risen some, $450 to $550. If it is the aluminum receiver, skip it. These have had trunion problems loosening in the receiver.

any quick way to tell with the reciever.  its a fac reciever i believe.  i am a newbie to g3's and need any pointers i can get.  i noticed that the reciver wasn't smooth. it had a bunch of bumps on the surface which i guessed was just from a finish of some sort. is that any help?

If it has a rough finish and a built in scope mount stay away. Those are junk.

FAC/D.C. Industries Cast Aluminum Receiver

so what are the known issues on this.  local gun shop has it for 450.  would i be better off building a parts rifle from a cetme kit. i have seen that centerfire has kits for 99.97 with new barrel.  thanks for all the help everyone has provided so far.

The problems that I have read is that the trunion is pinned and epoxied to the aluminum receiver. Some reports have it that after 300 to 500 rounds, the barrel/trunion assembly loosens up in the receiver and wiggles around.

I would save a few $ more and get a sheet metal receiver version, Century' are overall OK, the PTR-91, would be a better choice. Custom builds, Greek, Port or German HK's can be had as well. Prices and what's available fluctuate constantly. Keep an eye out at your local shop, for sale and auction boards.

Another thing I've heard of is the receiver stretches over time throwing off the bolt gap. Indicator is usually excessive recoil. Obviously a dangerous condition that could lead to a burst case.
