Ok my brother gave me a receiver and barrel of a K98.

This is a question for all older guns (mosin nagants and the like)

How long will the barrel last? Do some guns last longer than others?  Can you get replacement barrels for when they do crap out?

with proper cleaning and use you should never wear a barrel out! not with ammo prices nowdays.

so, details on the barrel / receiver ? code and year of manufacture? how is the bluing and bore condition ? does it have all the bolt parts / sights / trigger ?

and PICTURES !

How's the bore look?  Remember those old WWII rifles fired corrisive ammo and if not cleaned properly they will rust and pit.  The good news is that you can get new aftermarket barrels for that receiver and make a nice hunting rifle or target gun.  Any competent gunsmith can rebarrel it for you.

It was made in 44. The trigger and sights are sporterized. Its got the nazi insignias and all that. pretty cool. If it would wear out I would just put a nice wood stock on it and hang it on the wall. Which by the way, is there  a place you can buy wood stocks for them? Thanks!

That barrel has already been here longer than you have most likely and will be shootable long after you are gone.  8mm is not one of those rounds most people shoot enough out of a bolt gun to kill a barrel.

Ive seen some very terrible barrels on alot of K98s............  i learned how to judge a barrel the hard way. bought one that was weak, and counter bored. wouldnt even hit the target or the board the target was on at 100 yards- even with handloads. that was my first K98 and i traded it off asap to a friend who wanted it for parts.  i have another one, that will shoot 1.5" groups at 100 yards with ease.

if the rifle was say..... fired til the barrel was smoking hot, the current "owner" gets smoked and the rifle lays in the grass for a few weeks with corrosive ammo residue in it, you can bet that 8mm barrel will have quite a bit of damage inside.

the barrels on these can go VERY bad. no cleaning or improper cleaning can do quite a bit of damage.
