| if i want to swap m y barrel on, my ar. is it ok for my to just use a receiver stud block and it wont damage or tweek my upper will i torque it. i know the reciver block is perferred, but i dont want to spend 70 bucks on a one time tool. |

Not sure exactly what stud block your referring to but best is obviously the clamp type action block. I use the delrin action block that has the two pins that go through pivot pin and takedown pin holes then I clamp it width wise in the vice (use common sense and dont smoke it) with something on top of the rails like a chunk of cut off chopping block or hard rubber to make sure not to damage it. Then torque away, within spec of coarse.
Is it the right way? No but it does work and you are a lot less likely to crack your reciever at the ejection port if all the force is just on the upper reciever lugs. |

I think it would be safe & sturdy for a barrel swap. What the torque on threw barrel nut, about 20lbs? |

30ft lb minimum not to exceed 80ft lbs to line up gas tube.
Build torques |

Quoted: Those are not the ideal as the point of "hold" is far enough from the point of torque being applied that the lugs can bend or break. The type of block which completely encircles the upper receiver is much preferred.Quoted: Not sure exactly what stud block your referring to but best is obviously the clamp type action block. You are correct, your likely to break the upper receiver at the ejection port or lugs if you just use the upper block clamped vertical. If you put the upper in the block and on its side ejection port facing up or down then clamp the whole thing in the vice like that with another piece of delrin like a chunk of chopping block , stout piece of rubber or wood and clamp it down not all the force is going directly to the lugs. Is it ideal? No, but it will work in a pinch. Or in my case where I'm with the OP and don't wish to fork it the loot on a tool hardly used. |

Well, that's an opinon.
Another is to use set of barrel blocks. It will do anything receiver blocks will (with the exception of some NM FFT's) and then some, including the FH. Cost less, not possible to crush the upper and you can use them to bore sight upper. With the exception of Spikes (FT only) this is not possible with a receiver block |
