I found a M1 Garand for sale in which the owner says he recieved refinished directly from CMP and is now selling it.  He has certification for it and he said he hasn't taken out of the box yet.  Its a SA with a 42XXXXX (7 digit) serial #.  He is asking $1200 for it.  I kinda want to buy it, it looks real nice, but not nice enough not to shoot which is why I want it.  Is this a good deal or not?  What I really like about it is that it doesn't look used at all and that I can get a lot of rounds through it before having to repair something.

sounds like a CMP Select grade.  They went for $800 last time they were sold, so that should give you an idea on the markup.

"Special Grade"  $895.00 plus shipping. These were the ones sold this past year.

The word Select was changed to Special so it would not confuse people with a grade the CMP offered before.

Little over $900.00 with the shipping. Offer the guy 1K and meet him in the middle if you really want one. OR you can order yourself a correct grade for $950.00 plus shipping. OR

Order a Service grade and a new CMP walnut set.  This one cost me $762.00 total with tax and a new CMP walnut set. TE was 1MW was 1.5,, SA SG 5.9M

Good Luck, AJ

+1, not much to it at all.  I just placed my first order and it was easier than I expected.

I'm spoiled as CMP south is less than two hours away. I've gotten a Harvester and some Inland Carbines. Their grading is conservative. I'd just meet the qualifications and go order one. Even better would be to go to the store and pick one out. It's an awesome experience to walk into a room that has several hundred Garands, Carbines, and miscellaneous items.

The Special grades were refinished and also had a new Wilson barrel installed.  The two that I have in my safe are accurate as hell.

Mine were $895 each, picked up personally at the north store.  Word is they will not be offered again.

That said, I thought asking $1200 for one less than a year after they were put on the market was a bit much...Although, I was offered an unsolicited $1100 for one several weeks ago at the range.

Also, by going through CMP, you have some sort of backing as they have great Customer Service and if there is an issue with your rifle, they will correct it.
