| i just bought a m14 rifle and would like to do some hand loads for it.the only rifle rounds ive reloaded are .223.can somebody give me a good starting point for powder and bullet weight?i have 4895,varget,h335,tac,powders.thanks |

You've got to provide more info... namely what kind of projectiles you have, what powder you plan on loading with, what kind of primers you have. As always, don't trust us and consult a reloading manual or powder MFG website. My standard load for .308 uses 43 gr of Ramshot TAC, 150 gr Winchester PP bullet, Winchester large rifle primers, BHA match once fired brass, loaded to a cartridge overall length of 2.720'' on average. In case you don't know where to start.... I'll share what I do....
My first attempt at .308 reloading. All thoughts / comments are welcome. Once Fired FC Brass - Sized, Prepped, Tumbled and Trimmed to 2.005 length, Federal Match Large Rifle Primers 43.5 grains Varget powder, 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet OAL 2.780 To be fired in Remington R-25 and FNAR - both semi-autos with 20" barrels.

| I have only loaded the heavy stiff since I started reloading in '06. I have used 41.7 and 42.2 of 4895 topped off with a 178 AMAX using a Hornady case. I arrived at those charges using a chrony using two different lots . I also arrived at 42.7 of 4064 using the same case but with the Hornady 178 BTHP. The 4895 load is about 22 fps faster than the 4064. I buy in kegs or multiple one pounders so it takes me a while to go through a lot. I am really look at 8208xb is the next one to play around with simply because its a temp stable powder but I haven't seen too much use with it in heavy bullets. |

The old M1A service rifle match round recipe was 40.5 gr IMR 4895 driving a 168 gr OTM in a 1X LC case. Your IMR or H 4895 will be hard to beat. You can tune it to drive 147 gr, 150 gr, etc. bullets. Be careful using Max loads published in some loading manuals and publications because those loads may be based on bolt action 24" test barrels.
I use 4895 to drive my M1A action (socom16) at 41gr.; 4895 to drive my DI AR-10 like at 43 gr.; 4895 to drive my 26" Remy Bolt at 44 gr. |
