Well I decided to clean my V53 tonight and when I separated the bolt from the bolt carrier, both rollers and the roller holder fell out. The rollpin is flush with the bolt head so I'm guessing that it's worn enough on the inside so it won't keep the roller holder in place.

I've just over 500 rounds through this gun.  Should I replace the roller holder and rollpin just to be on the safe side or just reinstall the old parts?

You can do either. It will not harm the rifle in any way to shoot it with a broken retainer plate. If you get tired chasing around loose rollers while cleaning the gun I suggest the updated retainer. It's a looped wire instead of a plate, the roll pin holds it in place inside the bolt head.

Thanks for replying. After I posted I saw another member had a similar problem. I'll see if I can find that new retaining spring you're talking about and get a few spare parts while I'm at it.

I've shot with the top HK MP5 instructor in the country and guess what? His retainer plate was broken on his MP5. I guess he don't what he's doing either.

I wasn't able to find the newer style retaining spring so Adam at HKparts set me up with some replacement parts. The old retainer did not appear damaged so I reinstalled it with the rollers and old rollpin. I had to drive the rollpin past flush to hold the retainer in place but everything seems to be working OK. If the rollers fall out again, I'll just use the new plate and pin.

Here's the patient with a Surefire M63 rail and Streamlight TLR2.
