i have a very old security system and i'd like to piece together a newer unit. i really only have an overview of those things i need. i'd appreciate the feedback and guidance on purchasing and building a reliable system. i'd also like some redundancy for the exterior.
1st, this address is in the country and the building i want to secure is a great distance from the roadway. 2nd, i don't know what types of hardware are necessary. physical switches to be opened or closed in terms of hardwired circuitry or motion sensors, both, cameras, etc. 3rd, as always i'm trying to keep most folks out (not the pros, since i'm unwilling to secure it to that level) and i will adhere to a budget. $1000 to get going was my hope... so i keep hearing people mention a series of infrared trail cams as a cheap way to keep a log of those coming and going. that i'm probably going to do regardless and i have some good areas to place them to snag the front and rear of the vehicle and license plate. there is no other way to enter the property unless you're using a copter, so i have that portion covered. but of course, that is just peace of mind or to turn in after a burglary. in terms of genuine deterence and prevention i need an actual system. where can i buy one myself? i'm plenty capable of installation myself so that isn't a problem. i also know my local sheriff isn't going to want a dialer coming into him every ten minutes if a blowfly sets off a motion sensor, so i can set that up to ring my google number instead. i'm not going to subscribe to a provider so brinks or the likes are out. i also hear that fake security signs or dog signs can be a deterrent, so i'm willing to add those to the exterior if need be. i do in fact have schutzhund III tranined GSDs onsite, but i'd prefer the cops come or the burglers were deterred prior to the lads taking a hunk out of a meth head, or being shot at by said dipshit... do any of you have guidance, buying tips, or recommendations on the needs of a system like this? any help would be great. again, i can install this and maintain this myself, but i'm not sure which particular places to shop or the specific types of components i actually would be wise to purchase and implement. thanks in advance. |

nothing huh? that's ok, it was a stab in the dark...
to follow up since there were 137 looks at my post, i figured i'd provide some feedback. i shopped around and was really amazed at how little i knew. most everything that seemed to be reasonable in cost and made sense to me was generally junk or a poor choice. things like wireless cameras are apparently a PITA and can be problematic. especially the cheap ones. i ended up finding a private security firm that rotates out their equipment. as such i bought 8 wired infra cameras, the DVR, and junction box for a just a couple hundred bucks. these are the types of units used in diners, the mall, etc. so they seem pretty tough, the images are clear, and the DVR has a ton of storage space. while each of these parts showed some minor signs of wear, they work like a top and are of high quality. i asked the obvious question of why they are rotated out, and my friend answered by saying "because we charge enough we can..." i suppose there as camera and pixel tech continue to grow, you can do more with less all the time. it isn't like i'm using these cams for watching shoplifters at the mall with a viewing range of 50 yards... my stuff is very close, so these work very very well. i ended up with a hard wired dialer too. so... for capturing images and dialing the sheriff upon perimeter breach i'm GTG. i used motion instead of dedicated window and door switches as i found a really great series of detectors that are adjustable. to adjust i left the lights on, windows open, and let all the june bugs and moths in one night, set the motion so it won't pick them up (didn't want to be a nuisance to the sheriff's office), and then made sure i'll pick up something as small as a paper airplane - done. i put signs up around the exterior, stickers on the doors and windows at eyeball height, and if they want to tangle with my Schutzhund III titled German Shepherd Dogs after all that, they are welcome... i also put in a couple of IR trail cams in secured places to catch vehicles, especially license plates, people, etc. so i managed to do the whole thing under $1k which really was a goal i had set... i talked to a private security pal of mine and he basically said, dogs aside, that i had built a $5k system that would not only detour criminals and keep things safe, but offer great flexibility and reliability. the redundancy is intact and i'm not relying on 110AC power solely, so in the case of power outages, either accidental or deliberate, i'm still in pretty fair shape. i thought i'd share. i hope this finds you all well... |
